Bright Sparks is a small informal school serving children from a slum area known as ‘the colony’ in Mohali, Northern India. There are around 110 pupils at the school which offers a flexible approach to education engaging children who would otherwise be illiterate. The children come from extreme poverty, many have part time jobs and/or work responsibilities in the home. Even state education comes at a 'nominal price' in Mohali which prevents these children from accessing an education. The charity teaches children to read and write improving their life chances, making the world easier to navigate, and enriching their personal experience of life. The school also pays fees for pupils who graduate through the school years to attend a local independent school. The school has been running for over 10 years and was established by Founder, Gail Edwards, with Indian Trustee Nimrat Kaur. The school operates from a rented building, it costs about 12k per annum including rent and salaries for 4 teachers including fees for the local independent school. However costs are rising fast and we need to increase our fundraising efforts. We are currently in the process of establishing localised fundraising in India which we hope will provide greater sustainability for the school over the long term. Trustees commit to fundraising £500 each per annum and work together as a small friendly group providing governance and support to the school. Fundraising is typically done through challenge events and social events. We also have a number donors providing monthly gifts. Skills & experience we need currently include; marketing, education, international development - particularly experiece in India, and fundraising.
