School in a Bag

To fund raise, pack and distribute SchoolBags containing stationery and learning resources to poor, orphan and disaster affected children throughout the world so that we can give some hope to their future and offer them a better opportunity for learning.

The project started in October 2009 and will continue into the future.

  • Need

Globally, there are millions of under privileged, poor, orphan and disaster affected children who are deprived of an opportunity to learn due to a lack of the most basic learning equipment and resources.

In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, displaced children are often faced with trauma, grief and shock and are unable to talk about their experience, but can express their feelings in writing or by drawing.

School in a Bag is a simple solution – each bag is filled with basic stationery equipment and resources that will enable a child to write, colour, draw, calculate, express themselves and above all learn.

On an individual basis, a School in a Bag for these children could be their lifeline to a future out of hardship. On a world scale, educating the future generation is a key force towards human development and global stability.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Fund raise for School in a Bag to create SchoolBags for poor orphan and disaster affected children

» By promoting of the School in a Bag concept to clubs, organisations, businesses and the general public.

    What success will look like

Success will be generating more funds and sponsors so that we can create more SchoolBags and help more children allowing us to set targets throughout the year.

    Aim 2

To involve more schools in the concept of School in a Bag.

» Currently schools fund raise for Schoolbags and we take the stock back to the school so the children can pack the SchoolBags their fund has created.

    What success will look like

Success will be in giving children the opportunity to see and pack the SchoolBags their fundraising has created and show them via images where globally their SchoolBags were sent.

    Aim 3

To turn a barn on the farm where we are based into a warehouse.

» This will enable us to hold more stock so we can create more Schoolbags and utilise our volunteers to come and pack.

    What success will look like

Success will be having more stock stored and utilising the 80 PSA volunteers so we can pack SchoolBags more readily distributing them more frequently.

    Aim 4

To work alongside charities, groups, orphanages and schools where our Schoolbags are sent.

» This will strengthen the reliability of our distribution, enable future contact and enable us to reach out to a wider need of children

    What success will look like

Success will be in forming more links with charities and like minded groups around the world which will increase the network and therefore need for School in a Bag.

  • Impact

School in a Bag can provide hope and opportunity to a better learning experience for every child who receives a SchoolBag.

We will demonstrate the success to our donors by displaying the conditions/learning opportunities for SchoolBag recipients before and after receiving a SchoolBag. We will keep in contact with schools, orphanages who receive SchoolBags so we can monitor the learning progress of their students. Success will be measured by an increase in students attending schools.

The biggest risk is ensuring that the SchoolBags reach their intended recipients.

We always ensure that the SchoolBags are sent to an organisation with a registered address and a contact who will act as our consignee for the delivery. Where necessary, we will contact the authorities/embassies to give them prior warning of the delivery and a knowledge of what they will be receiving.

Each SchoolBag is numbered - donors will receive a thank you letter notifying them of the SchoolBag numbers that they have funded.

Where possible, donors will also be able to see images and information of the Schoolbags they funded via our website, facebook page and newsletters.

      Amount Heading Description
£50,000 Rucksacks Would fund 10,000 rucksacks

  • Background

SchoolBags will be packed primarily at the PSA HQ in Somerset.
SchoolBags will be sent to schools, orphanages and community groups all over the world. SchoolBags to date (Nov 2010) have been sent to Swaziland and Sierra Leone whilst the next batch of SchoolBags are destined for Sierra Leone, Kenya and Sri Lanka.

The children and schools/orphanages who receive the Schoolbags would be the primary beneficiaries, as would the teachers/community leaders who teach the children.

The communities where the Schoolbags are sent will benefit from their children having a better opportunity and resources to learn and become educated.

School children who fund raise will benefit from packing their SchoolBags and seeing who it is they have helped.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

School in a Bag is already underway - we have been involved with two projects already where SchoolBags have been sent out to help children so we know how to run the program and we have already learned some of the factors to make the process more efficient.
