Waymarks Education Centre - more than a school

Working with local people to build a school so children from very poor families are given the chance to go to school. The school will provide not just education but food and life skills to improve the life chances of some of the most vulnerable children in Kenya.

    Need

    The shortage of access to education for children from very poor families.
    The area is one of subsistence farming, mostly on very small plots of land. There is a slum area which "houses" children who have no access to education. Many children are orphans because of HIV/Aids and some because of the post election troubles of 2007-8.

    Solution

    We have purchased land and started to build a school. The school is now registered with the authorities which means the children can sit state examinations and gain qualifications. The funding is not just for building classrooms but it is establishing sustainable projects that will provide a long term income for the school. This will mean it can continue to provide education for even the poorest children in the area.

    » Fundraising events throughout the year ranging from coffee mornings and dinners to abseiling down tall buildings like Fort Dunlop in Birmingham
    » Working with schools to promote links and engage with them to help them make a difference to the children in Africa.
    » Involvement with clothing recycling organisations to generate funds.
    » Engaging with organisations such as Inner Wheel and churches on an \"After Dinner Speaking\" basis to promote the project.

    Success will be seeing the classrooms built and full of children who are receiving nourishment in both mind and body. January 2010 91children- October 2010 176 - 2012 400+ children


  • Impact

    Impact

    The sustainable projects will give the school a level of independence that means it will not be reliant on charitable donations for it's survival.
    The accounts of the school will reflect this independence.

    Risk

    Sustainable projects tend to be based on agriculture. One disastrous season could undo years of work. To avoid this we are looking at a diverse range of projects to provide the income needed for sustainability.
    There are also risks when working at distance of corruption. We have involved the local Education Officer in our work to act as an impartial observer. We have visited the school and seen the work and met and stayed in the homes of those involved from the local community.

    Reporting

    Via the bi-monthly newsletter, updates on the website and directly via email.
    The annual report of the charity will also provide a detailed outline of what has been achieved and how funds have been spent.

  • Background

    Location

    Moi’s Bridge is in western Kenya. It is in the Rift Valley district where most of the 2007-8 troubles occurred. The school is near the centre of the town. The economy is based on subsistence farming based on very small plots of land. The vast majority of people are below the poverty line and as a result there are over 4000 children in the area who are in need of help. The slum area of the town is near the school and we are targeting those children. Jan 10 91 kids in class, Oct 176 -2012 400+ ?

    Beneficiaries

    The primary beneficiaries would be children from the area around the school, particularly the slum. Because the school is being built by a local builder and the furniture made in the town there will be a positive effect on the local economy. We will source as much as we can from the local area, The community is already seeing the work and has been encouraged to get involved. In an area where planning is at best about this week we are giving hope for the future.

    Why Us?

    In Kenya most charity work is focused on the high profile slums of Nairobi and Mombasa. The area is 370km from Nairobi, off the tourist trail. We have experience in Zimbabwe of setting up sustainable projects and as a small, volunteer run charity, we can get things done in an efficient way without lots of discussions and administrative costs. We have a proven track record.

    People

    Maurice Chesoli

    Maurice, a local pastor, oversees the work, liaises with tradesmen, the local chief, council and the education office. He manages the project unpaid.

    Paul Birech Boit

    Local Education Officer. He is a government official with a lot of experience in education. He acts as an adviser and inspector to the school and us.
