Adult Basic Skills And Employability Programme

Wakefield has a population of 322,300 out of which 151,300 are in employment (both part time and full time). Less than half of the working population have level 3 qualifications and above, while 38,690 are claiming some form of benefit. The shortage of basic skills has led to loss of jobs.

  • Need


    The project will offer our learners the basic knowledge required to be able to function in our society.
    Our learners’ confidence will be boosted by the understanding of ICT and they will be encouraged to move on in society.
    Literacy and Numeracy skills will develop up to level 2.
    Our learners will also be taught how to trouble-shoot and repair computers.
    Employability Skills Development (job search and interview skills)
    ESOL Training (English for Speakers of Other Languages


    1. Learners will graduate with NOCN certifications.
    2. All the learners will achieve employability skills development.
    3 All the learners will be able to operate a computer.
    4. Learners will write a curriculum vitae (CV).
    5 Learners will be sign-posted into volunteering opportunities.
    6. Learners' confidence will be improved.
    7.Learners will be empowered with the necessary skills to be self employed and to secure paid employment.
    8. The project will take people off the streets.

    Aim 1

    To train all our participants in ESOL, Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and employability skills development


    » Through teaching delivery, training and one-to-one support and portfolio based assignments

    What success will look like

    Success will be training 150 participants to achieve basic skills qualifications of up to Level 2 certificates

    Aim 2

    To deliver and empower our learners with employability skills development strategies


    » Classroom based training and support. Job search training sessions and role-play session to practice interviews.

    What success will look like

    Success will be ensuring that 75% of our learners move into paid employment and the remaining 25% progress into volunteering or higher education

    Aim 3

    To offer Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) to our learners in any areas that may be needed


    » One-to-one advice and support from staff and volunteers who have been trained professionally to offer these services. Referrals when it is necessary.

    What success will look like

    Success will be all our participants would be advised on the way forward into employment and would be sign-posted to the necessary quarters of progression in the society

    To enable participants to be positively engaged thereby reducing the possibility of offending.

    Success will be engaging the learners to be actively involved positively in the society and will encouraged on contributing or initiating positive projects in the society

    To deliver and empower our learners with employability skills development strategies.


    » We aim to train the participants how to continue to develop and update their skills while working so as to become employable continuously.

    Success will be enabling the participants to be employable and indispensable in their work place through the development of employability skills and discovering their potentials

    Learners would nationally recognised certificates
    The number of learners who progresses into further/higher education
    It will reduce the number of people on benefits
    It will reduce un-employment
    Learners who are parents would be able to help their children in their homework
    It will help learners to overcome depression
    Migrant learners would be able to speak, read and write


    We have considered the risks in our centre and we have conducted a thorough risk assessments, copies of which are available in our centre


    We will report by producing the relevant copies of NOCN (National Open College Network) certificates achieved
    We will keep records of all our learners' achievements and they will be available on request from our donors
    We will also keep records of the progressions (employment / Schools)

    The project will take place at our learning centre in Wakefield, West Yorkshire


    Every Adult in Wakefield and its environs who are currently below Level 2 in Basic skills.
    All Migrants who are unable to speak, read or write English Language in Wakefield and its environs (Normanton, Castleford, Pontefract, South Kirby, Ossett, etc).
    All adults in Wakefield area who are unable to use the computer.
    All adults who are unemployed.
    Lone Parents in the Wakefield area
    Every adults who has been made redundant as a result of lack of skill in the Wakefield area.

    We are specialists in the delivery of BASIC SKILLS for adult education training. All our tutors and volunteers have relevant qualifications in the adult education sector coupled with relevant experiences and good understanding of the region's challenges.

    Mr. Julius Olutokun - the present coordinator of the centre has tremendous experience in the adult education / employment consultancy.

    Folashade Olaniyi

    Shade Olaniyi is the basic skills lead tutor. She completed teacher training education at Wakefield College and also holds a Masters in Psychology.
