2011 Production Syndicate for Rigoletto by Verdi

One of many reasons Opera Holland Park Friends exists is to give financial support to Opera Holland Park's productions. The 2011 production syndicate aims to raise much needed funds to bring OHP's new production of Rigoletto, one of the best-known of all great chorus operas, to the stage.

  • Need

OHP operates on a small but carefully spent budget. Rigoletto is one of the great chorus operas, requiring strong lead voices and large forces, both on stage and in the orchestra pit. The great works of Verdi's midd-to-late career are particularly expensive to stage well.

The extra funding from the production syndicate will help to make a difference in many ways. Depending on the amount raised, this may mean the opportunity to schedule an extra rehearsal, with the orchestra, the chance to cast a specific singer, the ability to engage a larger chorus or additional funding for scenery, costumes or props.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To increase the quality of the production and therefore the enjoyment of the audience too.

» - to schedule an additional rehearsal with the full orchestra - increase the size of the chorus - cast a specific lead singer - fund costumes

    What success will look like

Success will be nine sell-out performances, with excellent music press reviews, proving that the artistic quality of OHP's productions are continualy improving.

  • Impact

A particularly successful production will help to raise the profile of Opera Holland Park and the small dedicated team. The extra funding provided for the production will increase OHP's standing within opera and music circles, enabling OHP to more easily attract star singers in addition to nurturing young talent. A successful production will also increase OHP's ability to bring in a corporate sponsors and further donations from individuals and trusts and foundations.

The risk is that there will be little in the way of additional funds to allocate to Rigoletto, bar the bare minimum in the budget. OHP may not be able to do justice to the large chorus voice required. However, the production team will work with the resources available and although there may be no funds for an additional rehearsal, the show will still go ahead, but perhaps with a little less panache than originally envisaged.

Donors will be kept informed by way of invitations to pre-performance events, eg. attend a production team meeting, attend a lecture on Rigoletto, attend two working rehearsals, a dress rehearsal and the first night with interval drinks and the post-performance party (please ask for the full list).
