Funds are being sought for our Horseriding Programme that will support 35 disabled students who are presently unable to communicate. The value of riding for disabled children offers therapeutic benefit on both physical and emotional levels.

  • Need


    Horseriding supports mobility, enables the rider to become more relaxed and supple. Children with disabilities discover a new freedom in movement and become more confident, consequently releasing their inner tensions.


    Students benefiting from horseriding, begin to intertact and bond with their hors. This results in commencing to communicate with their friends, families and staff. This programme has been piloted and it is vital that horse-riding project becomes a weekly norm. Evidence has shown that animal therapy has encouraged major developments where other therapies have failed.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Awareness - Animal therapy helps children locked in their inner world become aware of themselves.


    » We plan to offer horseriding lessons to 30 students. The three hour session integrates a personal growth plan in consultation with Ohel Sarah's staff.

    What success will look like

    Success will be evaluated by their performance during the rest of the day/week.

    Aim 2

    The rider's body will be relaxed and reduce spasticity.


    » Offer horseriding sessions as part of the overall curriculum

    What success will look like

    Success will be attained as their balance, posture and coordination is improved.

    Aim 3

    Communicating with others who care for her/him.


    » Communication - The highly sensitive horse responds to the touch, as the child bonds with it

    What success will look like

    Success will be accomplished by the breakthrough in improved communication with their siblings, family and friends.

    Aim 4

    Caring for the pony teaches the rider the value of caring for himself .


    » Responsibility - Grooming and feeding the horses teaches them basic self care skills.

    What success will look like

    Success will be shown through the way our students become aware of the importance of hygiene and grooming.

    Aim 5

    Freedom - To liberate the child from his/her invisible chains of disability


    » The invigorating feeling of independence as he/she rides across the open spaces

    What success will look like

    Success will be measured through improved communication during their daily studies and his anticipation in attending regular horseriding sessions.

  • Impact


    Evidence has shown that horseriding has helped special children to reach his potential where a classroom environment has failed.
    Ohel Sarah has introduced modern methods in communicating with special children.


    Horseriding is not being funded by the Government, which unfortunately puts restrictions on the availability of those benefiting from this programme. Presently, this has not been made available due to lack of funds. As soon as funds are secured horseriding will recommence.(April 2013)


    We plan to inform our donors of the progress these children are making as a result of this therapy. On a general note, we invite all donors and interested parties to visit Ohel Sarah.

  • Background


    Ohel Sarah take the children to a pastoral set-up which is a 45 minute drive from Tel Aviv. This is located in the countryside


    The riders and their carers. The teachers and their therapists, family and friends. Ohel Sarah is serving 400 learning disabled students in Israel. Our services are located in the Dan Region of Israel, where the big divide between rich and poor is present. Many of our students rely on us for their full time care including three nutritious meals a day.

    Ohel Sarah has been supporting special needs students since 1970. Today we care for 400 students and offer a comprehensive range of activities that cover education, leisure, training/employment and residential care. Our raison d'etre is learning disability, focused on one to one development. Our 150 staff attend workshops, conferences learning new approaches to achieve optimum results.
