Charity information: UK Youth
Our problem is aimed at disadvantaged young people who are lacking basic skills in food preparation and healthy eating to make informed and healthy decisions around cookery and balanced eating and prepare simple recipes that can be made regardless of the size or type of kitchen. This project will be particularly aimed at hard to reach groups such as young mothers, young carers, young people in care themselves and young men.
The project will build life skills based around meals that can be made with a single hob or a mini oven/stove and utensils that can all be obtained from a £1 shop. This would therefore ensure that the whole project is available to any young person who wants to take part. The pproject would be accompanied by a set of pictorial cookery cards and would provide simple and effective ways to cook, which will get young people making easy and affordable.
To get disadvantaged young people understanding the basic principles of cookery.
Activities» Young people will be trained by workers who will provide support and will be given pictorial cookery cards to aid them.
What success will look like
More young people feeling confident about cookery and able to put together basic meals. This will be confirmed by their workers.
In addition disadvantaged young people can have their work on this project accredited.
Activities» The young people will keep a portfolio of their work on this project which will record their progress. This will help them to develop key skills.
What success will look like
Portfolios are submitted and assessed externally and accreditations are awarded upon successful completion. Young people will receive a certificate for their achievement.
More disadvantaged young people who need additional help and support will understand the basic principles of cookery and be able to cook for themselves, their families and friends. In the long term young people will learn how to eat healthily and which will help combat obesity and long term health issues associated with being overweight. It will also help those young people who want to get back into employment, education or training with the completion of their accreditation.
The possibility of not enough take up, however we have thousands of young people within our network that we can publicise this to and young people have told us that this is a particular area they would like to work on.
We will inform donors of the progress of the programme through quarterly reports which will tell them how many young people have taken up the programme and how many of those have gained an accreditation. Donors can visit groups of young people who have taken part to see how it has made a difference
