  • Need

    Need

INDIVIDUALS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES DO NOT HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES THAT THOSE IN MAINSTREAM SOCIETY TAKE FOR GRANTED. LOCAL CARE SERVICES OFFER DAY CENTRE ATTENDANCE, PERHAPS WORKING IN A CHARITY SHOP ETC, BUT WE HAVE SEEN THE NEED FOR A PROGRAMME THAT OFFERS SOMETHING DIFFERENT WHICH CHALLENGES AND STRETCHES THE INDIVIDUAL CONCERNED

    Solution

THE PROJECT WILL OFFER WORKSHOP-STYLE ACTIVITIES WHICH WILL CHALLENGE INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANTS AND HELP THEM TO ACHIEVE MORE OF THEIR POTENTIAL. UNDERTAKING THIS PROGRAMME GIVES THEM A RENEWED SENSE OF CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM, ENABLES THEM TO LEARN NEW SKILLS AND TO WORK WITH OTHERS. FOR SOME IT WILL BE TO SIMPLY ENGAGE WITH AN ACTIVITY WHEN THEY HAVE NOT ENGAGED WITH ANYTHING IN THE PAST.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

TO OFFER PRACTICAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT CHALLENGE AND STRETCH CLIENTS WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS

    Activities

» THE ACTIVITY WILL BE PARTICIPATION IN FURNITURE REFURBISHMENT WORKSHOPS; LEARNING ABOUT HEALTH & SAFETY, CORRECT USE OF TOOLS, SAFE USE OF PAINTS ETC.

WE WILL OFFER A MINIMUM OF 4 x 6 WEEK COURSES OF FURNITURE REFURBISHMENT INVOLVING A MINIMUM OF 24 INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANTS + 3 TRAINED VOLUNTEER MENTORS TO WORK WITH THEM

  • Impact

    Impact

THE LONG TERM CHANGES THAT THE PROJECT WILL BRING ABOUT ARE THAT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE MORE CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM SIMPLY THROUGH THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THE SESSIONS (WE ALREADY KNOW THIS AS WE HAVE RUN PILOT SESSIONS). THEY WILL BE ABLE TO BETTER IDENTIFY THEIR OWN NEEDS AND FEEL MORE ASSERTIVE IN ASKING FOR WHAT THEY NEED. WE WILL DEMONSTRATE THIS SUCCESS BY ASSESSING CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM LEVELS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE COURSES AND AGAIN AT THE END TO IDENTIFY DISTANCE TRAVELLED.

    Risk

THE RISKS TO THE PROJECT COULD BE THAT NO-ONE WANTS TO TAKE UP THE OFFER, BUT WE ALREADY HAVE PEOPLE WAITING TO PARTICIPATE. THERE ARE HEALTH & SAFETY RISKS WHEN USING SUBSTANCES SUCH AS PAINT WITH PEOPLE WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS, BUT WE HAVE ALREADY ASSESSED AND OVERCOME THESE IN THE PILOT PHASE AND EVERYONE INVOLVED KNOWS, FOR EXAMPLE, THAT THEY HAVE TO WEAR RELEVANT PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND ENSURE DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE OPEN IF USING PAINTS ETC.

    Reporting

DONORS WILL RECEIVE A QUARTERLY E-MAIL NEWSLETTER ON HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT, ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN, FEEDBACK FROM THOSE INVOLVED, PLUS INTENDED AND UNINTENDED OUTCOMES ETC. ANY CHANGES TO THE PROJECT WILL BE REQUESTED OF THE DONORS AS SOON AS THESE ARE IDENTIFIED.

  • Background

    Location

THE PROJECT WILL OPERATE IN OUR RE>BUILD WORKSHOP IN THE EAST BURY AREA, AN AREA THAT HAS SUFFERED FROM YEARS OF DEPRIVATION. THE WORKSHOP IS HOUSED WITHIN OUR LARGE WAREHOUSE WHERE DONATED FURNITURE IS ALSO SOLD TO LOW-INCOME FAMILIES. WHILE BURY IS CONSIDERED MORE AFFLUENT IN THE GREAT MANCHESTER AREA, THIS HIDES THE DISADVANTAGE THAT MANY PEOPLE, INCLUDING THOSE WITH DISABILITIES, FACE ON A DAILY BASIS.

    Beneficiaries

THE MAIN BENEFICIARIES WILL BE PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES AND/OR MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. THEY WILL GAIN SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE BY BEING INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY DELIVERED PROJECTS OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS, ACHIEVING SIGNIFICANTLY MORE THAN PROJECT TARGETS. OUR MAIN FOCUS IS ENABLING PEOPLE TO ACHIEVE THEIR POTENTIAL AND THIS IS WHY ALL INVOLVED HAVE ACHIEVED WAY MORE THAN THEY EXPECT, BOTH IN LEARNING AND IN MOVING ON TO PAID EMPLOYMENT OR FURTHER EDUCATION. WE HAVE ALREADY DELIVERED PILOT FURNITURE WORKSHOPS WITH PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES & THEY WOULD DEARLY LOVE FOR US TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THESE ON A PERMANENT BASIS

From .. no job and .. no prospects of a job … working at RE>BUILD transformed that. I went from a state of hopelessness and passed through RE>BUILD to a full-time job. The work’s honest and so are the people. It’s been one of the best experiences of my life. How do I know? Because REBUILD rebuilt me

After losing his job in his middle years, Jim (name changed for anonymity) was fed up with staring at four walls and stayed with us for about 9 months
