Aberdeen, "the city that cares", Food Appeal

There are around 18,000 families in Aberdeen who live on less than £50 per week. In light of this, we are launching a city wide food appeal project, which will distribute food to the city's most disadvantaged areas.

    Need

    We want to help give nourishment to individuals and families and also help to free their finances so they can afford to see to more pressing commitments, like rent, debt, and particularly increasing gas and electricity bills.

    Solution

    We will be giving immediate sustenance by distributing food in key community centres in the city of Aberdeen.

    Activities

    » Food collection: food bins in schools, council offices, churches. We also have a supplier who can give over 100 tons per month of food.
    » Food distribution: in key community centres and churches around the city food parcels will be distributed to those in need.

    Success will be measured by the amount of people helped , amount of food distributed.


  • Impact

    Impact

    We will build strong relationships with communities all round Aberdeen. As an organisation we already distribute furniture around the city into its most deprived areas, and have been hugely succesful in doing this. The food project will expand upon this service and help us to reach out to more and more people, and also raise our charity's profile in the city, which will give us the opportunity to attract donors to expand upon our service.

    Risk

    Co-operation with council, churches and businesses: we have a good relationship with the council, we help them in their social services and housing departments, and we will continue to have a good relationship with them. We will need donations from churches and businesses around the city, for this we have employed a full-time fundraiser with eight years experience as Business Liason Director for a leading UK televsion station.

    Reporting

    We have a newsletter which is updated regularly and are in the process of launching a new website.

    Beneficiaries

    Our project will collect and distribute food around various communities in the city of Aberdeen. Despite Aberdeen being a wealthy city because of North Sea oil, there are thousands of people who live outside of this prosperity. In a wealthy city like this, it is unacceptable that there are so many people in such desperate circumstances, it should not have to be like this, which is why we are taking the initiative to help those in need.

    Why Us?

    We already collect, recycle, and redistribute furniture and household goods around every community in our city. We have been hugely succesful in doing this since we started in 2003, and are now the largest charity providing to those in need in our city.

    Operations Manager, currently oversees the running of Somebody Cares Trust UK, will be overseeing the Food Appeal project.

    Fundraiser, will be meeting with local businesses and churches around the city to raise money for the Food Appeal.
