Avon Tyrrell Community Water Conservation Project
UK Youth wants to re-instate a sustainable drinking water supply at its Avon Tyrrell centre in the New Forest used by 20,000 people each year, supply the local community and use the project as an educational resource for the young people we work with.
June 2011 - October 2011
Charity information: UK Youth
The charity pays a huge amount in metered water costs each year at the 65 acre Avon Tyrrell site and this, along with environmental reasons, means we have identified the need to conserve and manage water more appropriately. There is plenty of help out there for renewable energy technologies in our drive to tackle climate change, be greener etc but not a lot for one of the key areas that affects us, namely the conservation of water as a resource.
Comprehensive studies & quotes by Southampton University & specialist companies have highlighted water conservation measures we can take. Most are straightforward to implement e.g. we have recently installed three composting loos and built a reed bed for sewage. One major area that we need furher help with is sinking a bore-hole to get our own water supply, including the pump, filters, UV treatment, connections and licences. The payback on savings and reducing our carbon footprint is quick.
To raise funds to commission a specialist engineering company to carry out the physical work needed.
Activities» Apply for help from various sources, allocate funds from UK youth's next budget.
What success will look like
Success will be raising the funds required to begin installation in 2011, gain the licence and see our own water supply flow!
Reduce/eliminate metered water costs, environmental impact and provide learning opportunities to all
Activities» Get the works installed in 2011, develop interpretation and learning activities for groups.
What success will look like
Success will be eliminating the bulk of our water costs, having surplus to supply neighbours & 20,000 visitors and wider community learning about water conservation.
A saving to to the charity of circa £7500 a year and likewise reducing neighbours bills if surplus viable (it should be), raising awareness of the importance of sustainanbility of resources and geography/geology curriculum learning to a broad audience. We will monitor bill changes / usage and uptake of learning opportunities, cworksheets, courses events etc. We will publicise the project to our network, local and national press.
None other than not being able to raise the funds to it, thus elaying the start. This exciting project has been reasearched and tested and known to be viable.
Quarterly reports via newsletters, emails. Also in annual report. Invitations to Avon Tyrrell to see the project in action.

Avon Tyrrell UK Youth Activity Centre, New Forest, Hampshire
Our charity UK Youth specializes in working with disadvantaged young people's groups from school, youth organisations from all over the UK. Avon Tyrrell is visted by around 20,000 such people each year - a beautiful safe environment to experience non-formal educational and volunteering programmes. Many of the young people would never have had been to such a place before, the benefits to the personal and social development is enormous. The centre is also the focus of much local community use.
UK Youth has a 100 year history of working for and with young people (65 at Avon Tyrrell), our innovative programmes are developed by the users. We have a great track record of delivering projects on time and within budget. We recognise for this project we need the help of outside expertise from a water engineering firm to complete it .
