The Avon Tyrrell Historic Estate Plan

Avon Tyrrell is UK Youth’s HQ and activity centre in the New Forest providing training, activities and holidays to 20,000 young people each year. We want to develop an estate plan to ensure the protection and sustainability of the Grade 1 listed 'Arts and Crafts' house and grounds.

  • Need

We want to develop activity programmes and facilities to benefit future generations of users of Avon Tyrrell but know we have an obligation to conserve, protect and enhance the important historic features of the 65 acre designed estate. We want to manage the land and facilities more sustainably and reverse previous mistakes.

By commissioning a specialist (landscape) architectural practice to work with us (and our UK Youth stragtegic development plan) to produce a long term site management plan that all our stakeholders can adopt and work to, we will do much to protect the site and provide learning and engagement opportunities as well as generally managing our affairs in a more sustainable manner.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To protect the historic buildings and landscape of Avon Tyrrell

» Develop a ful brief & commission a practice to carry out surveys, research and produce the long term management plan in 2011.

Success will be to get the 10 year plan completed in 2011 & adopted by trustees, staff, users, local authority and English Heritage .

    Aim 2

Provide learning & participation opportunities so our users can be involved in what it highlights.

» Events, guided tours, interpretation boards, publications, practical work projects.

Success will be engaging 50% of users and the local community in activities and events related to the management and development of the historic site.

  • Impact

The project will reverse the decline in important features of the listed estate and ensure any future developments are carried out sympathetically and sustainably to ensure future generations can enjoy, benefit & learn from visits to Avon Tyrrell.

Avon Tyrrell loses its historic interest value, features are lost, it becomes over commercialised, the aesthetics suffer etc. We recognise the value and have taken ad-hoc steps to do what we can in recent years but need a more comprehensive over-arching conservation plan that takes into account what we want to do as a charity for young people on the site in the coming years. The plan will act as a lever to secure more funding to carry ou tasks it may highlight.

Quarterly reports via email, newsletters, invitations to events and tours of Avon Tyrrell.

  • Background

Avon Tyrrell, the UK Youth centre, is between the villages of Bransgore and Burley on the west side of the New Forest, Hampshire.

Our charity UK Youth specializes in working with disadvantaged young people's groups from school, youth organisations from all over the UK. Avon Tyrrell is visted by around 20,000 such people each year - a beautiful safe environment to experience non-formal educational and volunteering programmes. Many of the young people would never have had been to such a place before, the benefits to the personal and social development is enormous. The centre is also the focus of much local community use.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

UK Youth has a 100 year history of working for and with young people (65 at Avon Tyrrell), our innovative programmes are developed by the users. We have a great track record of delivering projects on time and within budget. We recognise for this project we need the help of outside expertise from an architectural practice to produce the plan.
