Give the Gift of Freedom

Most of society doesn’t know that slavery still exists.
Yet, there are at least 12.3m people in slavery in the world today, and this needs to be stopped.
This project will kick-start bringing slavery into modern consciousness and make society more aware of modern slavery and the need to stop it.

  • Need

At least 12.3m people, mainly women and children, are still in slavery.
They are forced to work, trafficked, in bonded labour, or are in slavery because of their caste.
Yet, modern slavery remains hidden because the majority of society believes slavery disappeared hundreds of years ago.
If awareness were higher, there would be the necessary level of concerted public momentum needed for change. If more people know about modern slavery, they would take greater action to help stop it.

We will contact UK campaigners, schools and the media to create a wider cross-society nationwide movement to communicate that slavery still exists.
We will use our existing networks and contacts to create sustainable self-generating activities, as well as bring on board key opinion formers and leaders in the social, media and political spheres.
This will take to a higher level our objective of creating a critical mass of the general public to take action to help stop modern slavery.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

to increase awareness of modern slavery, so that more people are motivated to take action to end it

» e-mailshots, presentations, workshops, press releases and awareness-raising activities with campaigners, businesses, media, opinion leaders

Success will be measured by mapping out the broader networks of the charity, ie increased numbers of fundraisers, campaigners and supporters.

  • Impact

The project will create a larger and wider groundswell of public awareness, and start to transform the current social perception of slavery as an historical crime, to that of a modern major contemporary problem, to which they are personally connected, and have the motivation, power and skills to help solve.
We will monitor success by tracking changes in numbers of individuals and groups who become involved in our organisation’s activities, whether as members, campaigners or as fund-raisers.

There are risks that not all sectors will appreciate the need for mainstream awareness change or some will present substantial objections to participating or will have vested interests in not being involved.
We will deal with this by focussing more of our resources on those sectors which provide the most effective, efficient and scaleable response for joint collaboration.

Donors will receive a e-mail report at the end of the project, detailing activities undertaken, the results achieved, and further plans for building on the foundations created.
