  • Need

The demand upon the new Centre has increased significantly in the last two years by around 20%. Whilst we have sufficient counsellors we have insufficient space and capacity in Centre to meet the needs. Also the complexity of referrals is getting more marked and the need to equip counsellors for this more complex work is now necessary. We also want to ensure creative methods are available to appropriately meet client needs.

We will convert a store room into a therapy room and will also create a counselling room in the loft along with a creative therapies store room. We will improve the carbon footprint of the Victorian built building with superquilt insulation to increase efficiency and also increase facilities in the library with relevant materials including psycho-educational aids for clients.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Increase counselling rooms from five to seven

» Convert store room into a therapy room
» Create a counselling room in the loft area

    What success will look like

Success will be... when they are completed and commissioned.

    Aim 2

Extend on site facilities to creat more workspace

» Develop work and storage space in loft area

    What success will look like

Success will be...When building work is finished and space is in use.

    Aim 3

    Increase creative therapy resources

» By taking over the 'Hidden Treasures' collection of creative therapies resources and materials and using these at the Centre

    What success will look like

Success will be...when collection is received, stored and in use.

    Aim 4

Develop counsellors library with addittional resources and materials

» Purchase additional books, DVDs and psycho-educational aids for both clients and counsellors

    What success will look like

Success will be...All required items have been purchased.

    Aim 5

Improve services for survivors of trauma and dissociation and domestic violence.

» Through training and information raising with new materials availible in Library

    What success will look like

Success will be...When a wider range of facilities are available to clients and when more counsellors have received training in specialised areas as a result of increased resources

  • Impact

    1. More facilities and counselling rooms available and therefore more clients can be taken on.
    2. Reduced waiting times.
    3. Greater range of specialist provision.
    4. Demonstration of success will be by client evaluations and statistical evidence of improved service.

    1. Financial Risk - insufficient funding to achieve aims.
    2. Delayed timetable for implementing project.
    3. Action for dealing with risk will be to extend the fundraising focus until project achieved.

Reporting to donors will be through regular Friends of Willows' newsletters, Annual Reports, AGM, and regular email updates.

  • Background

Swindon, Wiltshire. This is a town of 200,000 plus population. It is a combination of old and new developments with long standing industries and new technologies. It has 3 urban-priority areas with high indices of multiple deprivation. It has high levels of re-located families and high divorce rates.

Willows provides a public charitable counselling service to all adults on a self-referral basis. We have high levels of clients presenting with childhood sexual abuse, early-life trauma, dissociation and domestic violence as well as the more common conditions of anxiety, depression, bereavement, relationship and identity issues. Swindon has been impacted by changes in the economic climate.
