Anirban Rural Welfare, Water, and Sanitation
VITAL has helped create an elementary school in the poor rural area of Anirban, India where many children have been deprived of an education. Clean water and sanitation facilities at the school are necessary to encourage the girls and boys to spend all day miles away from their family home.
As long as funds are available.
VITAL is trying to break the cycle of poverty in the poor rural subsistence farming community of Anirban, India. The people are mostly farmers who manage their life daily on a "hand-to-mouth" basis. The parents & elders are often illiterate and lack any education, creating an illiteracy cycle. Girls
are often more vulnerable of being deprived of an education because they cannot spend all day far from home without any toilet facilities or transport.
The project involves a free elementary education center in the rural area as well as recreation, counseling, health awareness & mother support services. Many children will be enrolled into formal schools after completion of the 'bridging' program. Wells and gender-specific bathrooms will be built so more children, especially girls, will be able to attend the school. Bicycles will also be provided to those children living the greatest distances away from the school.
To increase child education in the rural community.
Activities» Provide access to an elementary education center where children can improve math, literacy, science & geography skills necessary for their age range.
» Place children into formal education institutions, while encouraging and monitoring them until graduation.
» Prevent school drop-outs and child labour through parent awareness programs and support services (vocational training & regular parent meetings).
» Build gender specific bathrooms and a clean water well to encourage more children to attend the school.
Success will be demonstrated through a statistical analysis of the amount of children receiving education to those enrolled into formal schools since the program start date.
Improve child attendance at school, while decreasing the burden of no transportation.
Activities» Provide bicycles for children living especially far from the school in order to lessen travel time to and from school each day.
Success will be demonstrated by an improvement of children living beyond a certain radius in the rural area as well as an increase in the amount of girls attending school.
Create sustainable community ownership of the program & ensure parent awareness on important issues.
Activities» Regular parent/teacher and field coordinator meetings take place.
» Awareness workshops on health and human rights issues are hosted by the program.
» A vocational training workshop for mothers is attached to the project which also improves income & helps to lessen instances of child labour.
Success will be demonstrated by reports from parent, teacher & stakeholder meetings.
The biggest change will be the project's ability to increase education levels, particularly among the young girl population. Education is the only way to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. Awareness can ensure that rural communities understand their rights, especially with land ownership. Health issues and hygiene must be addressed to ensure all members of the community remain healthy.
One of the main risks is children choosing to drop out of school due to family pressure. Families may pressure their children to earn money on the streets or on local farms in order to bring in more income to the unit as a whole. The project also involves vocational programs for mothers & awareness workshops to address the importance of education. The vocational programs include Block Making, Tailoring, Embroidery, Mushroom cultivation to increase family income
A six month email newsletter will be sent out updating donors on the progress, activities & individual case studies. An annual monitoring and evaluation report will also be provided. Information will also regularly be available through our website.

The rural town of Anirban is located in the highly populated state of West Bengal, India, just inland of the capital Calcutta - famous for its acute & mass poverty. People residing in the area, are mainly farmers working as labourers or owning their own land. They often find it difficult to survive and provide for their family. The parents and elders of the community have little education and are illiterate. Child labour, exploitation, and underage marriage among girls is very common.
Low income families, particularly mothers and children receive an education, support, and resources.
VITAL & Anirban Rural Welfare Society are best to carry out the project because they have fostered important relationships throughout the community. Our success illustrates over 108 children mainstreamed into formal government schools, with a particular rise in the attendance of girls. Child labour has declined significantly in the area proving the methods used have gained the trust and respect of the community.
