Red Light District Project
Our red light district project provides protection, counselling and schooling to hundreds of children living in dangerous red light areas where there is a high concentration of hazardous sex work and trafficking. Our aim is to provide a better childhood and brighter future for those we care for.
The projects runs annually for ages 3-18 thanks to the generous donations of our supporters
Charity information: VITAL
There are an estimated 400 red light districts in India with millions of prostitues working in them, 30% of which are children. The children living in theses areas are amongst the most vulnerable to exploitation and abuse as they exist in an environment which is riddled with drugs, violence, alcohol and child trafficking. Many of the children are traumatised and suffer from low self esteem hence counselling plays an essential role in our project.
We meet the basic needs of all the children living in the red light districts as well as offer other work options to the mothers. Counselling is provided so that these children may heal and continue with their life. Healthcare and food is supplied allowing them to physically heal from the harsh conditions and neglect. Certified courses, internship and awareness programs are also offered. Since the project began not one child has followed their mother's into second-generation prostitution.
To help children living in and around the red light area of Rambagan to realise their full potential
Activities» Provide education, vocational training, healthcare, and counselling
The rate of attendance at schools will increase, along with overall grades, particularly within the population of young girls.
Protect children in these districts from abuse and exploitation
Activities» Provide a safe space inside the community and collaborate with the local police and UNODC to track missing persons.
Violence will decrease allowing a more community trust to develop in these areas.
Support a small group of students by giving them extra training on these social issues- peer group
Activities» Educational classes and training will be provided to a group of high school and college students so they can become more aware of their surroundings.
Awareness will be raised in order for the next generation to maintain a lasting change.
Sensitise the community and motivate them to adopt change.
Activities» Community groups will be established to motivate them to adopt our Child and Woman Friendly Communities (CWFC) approach inside their communities.
The community will have more pride in themselves if they partner with the NGOs and different organizations to develop a change together.
New policies must be implemented in order to secure a change in lifestyle for these children in red light zones. Education should become more of a priority instead of the children encouraged to beg on the streets. We hope the parents will begin to play a larger role in their childrens' lives allowing their kids to experience a childhood.
The largest risk is the relationship between the volunteers and the community. We have seen a great acceptance of this project thus far. Relationships have been established allowing the volunteers to have a greater impact and influence.
Updates and case studies are available in print or on the web. Progress may be given to individuals if inquired about through an email.

Rambagan is an age-old red light area in North Kolkata. Diseases, deformities, and malnutrition are rampant in the children living in these areas. While the women work at night, the children roam the streets begging for money. This can be quite dangerous and many suffer from attacks and abuse at these late hours of the night.
The whole area of Rambagan will benefit as the cycle of poverty and abuse is broken. However, the women and children in the red- light districts will benefit the most from the education, counselling, healthcare, encouragement, and safety found. A safe haven will be established within the district allowing the people to feel peace at mind while they attempt to heal and move on with their lives.
Rambagan has connections within the community as well as a high success rate. In the last thirteen years, the children helped through this project have all moved out of the districts leaving behind the world of prostitution. Education and love can account for this extreme level of success. This simply shows the willingness of the people to better their lives as well as the effective work done accomplished by Child In Need India.
