One Year to build and open
Lao Educational Opportunities Trust
Laos is a very poor Country where many families still live in the countryside as subsistence farmers and fisherman. The population is growing and half of the people are under 21. Basic education has to be paid for any many large families simply cannot afford to educate their children.
Towns like Luang Prabang are growing because of tourism. Many families are moving with the hope of education and better prospects for their children.
Learning a skill will help them get a job and escape poverty.
The project is focused on helping boys and girls.
It will give the basic three educational skills of reading, writing and arithmetic.
It will train them to be a bike or motorbike mechanic or as a seamstress.
With the help of our team they will find jobs at the completion of a years training or with the provision of micro loans we will help others set up a small business.
To give disadvantaged and unemployed young adults the skills to earn a living
Activities» Basic education to develop reading, writing and arithmetic skills
» Training the basic skills to become bike and motorbike mechanics
» Training the basic skills to become a seamstress
The students will attend school daily for two sessions. The first for schooling and the second for skills training. Success will be measured by assessment and regular attendance.
The long term goals are to raise students self esteem in their own skills and value. To build a good work ethic in themselves and enable them to work with others.
Our ultimate success will be in helping our students find a job or enabling them through a micro loan to start their own small business.
Ultimate success will be for them to achieve long term employment
Laos is a developing Country with many of the risks of corruption and the low level of education for much of the population.
As a development project it has the risk of understanding risk and opportunity.
LEOT was founded specifically to help the disadvantaged students in Laos. It will be ten years old in July and is experienced in dealing with its local community. The LEOT School is nearly four years old and has successfully grown over the years. In September it will help 250 students.
We will report by email, social media and our web page. We are also a registered UK Charity.
Donors are welcome to visit our projects and volunteer to help us.

The project is based in Luang Prabang Northern Laos. It is a poor Country of nearly 7 million people. It is about the same area as the UK and is mountainous with large rivers.
Its population is diverse with nearly 50 ethnic groups although most are from 3 groups
Most of the Country is very rural with very low incomes, high child mortality, poor education and health system. Many are subsistence farmers and fishermen. It was severely effected by the Vietnam War and is a single party state.
Young young men and women from disadvantaged families in the town and local villages will benefit directly.
When these youngsters complete their training and find jobs a considerable benefit will go to their wider families as bread winners in Lao traditionally give to all.
LEOT is a grass roots charity and has been working in Laos for ten years firstly granting educational scholarships. We have built the LEOT School and have run it successfully for four years ad in that time have assisted over 500 disadvantaged students.
The new training school will be built near our existing school.
