  • Need

Primary education is free, but Gambian families must buy books, food, uniform etc and pay fees for nursery and secondary education. Pageant's Sponsorship Scheme enables members to sponsor individual Gambian students throughout their educational career, providing continuity and a one-to-one relationship. However, sometimes a sponsor may not be able to afford to continue their donations, or sudden money problems in a Gambian family could jeopardise a student's continued education.

Pageant's Emergency Sponsorship Fund pays school fees and other costs until permanent sponsorship under Pageant's scheme can be arranged (or re-arranged), so that students are not forced to leave school at what could be a vital point in their education.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide continuing sponsorship, despite financial problems with sponsor or in the student's family.

» Receive information from sponsors that they cannot continue making donations.
» Receive information from head teachers about students whose continued attendance is in jeopardy due to arrears in payment.
» Organise Emergency Sponsorship payments to keep the student in school.

    What success will look like

Success will be uninterrupted education for each sponsored student.

  • Impact

The Gambia has a well developed state education system, providing education up to university level, but costs discriminate against students from poorer families. Pageant's Sponsorship Scheme gives some of these poorer students the chance to benefit from education to the full extent of their abilities, and the Emergency Sponsorship Fund provides a safety net for times of financial crisis.

Pageant is fully aware of the risks of funding not benefiting its intended recipient. Pageant uses trusted agents as our link to the students, and head teachers are contacted to ensure that the schools receive their dues from the sponsorship payments.

We routinely publish the numbers of sponsored students on our website and in our annual reports. However, we respect the privacy of individual students, so do not publish any personal details.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Pageant's members cover our operating costs through their annual subscriptions. This means that every penny of every donation is spent on our projects in The Gambia. Pageant has close relationships with over 100 schools in The Gambia. Our main Sponsorship Scheme and the Emergency Sponsorship Fund operate with the assistance of trusted head teachers, who let us know which of their pupils need financial help. Our agents ensure that money goes to the intended recipients.
