  • Need

Not enough of the UK's 15/16 year old top Design & Technology students are choosing to go on to study engineering and design at University. Without engineers many of today's urgent global and and domestic engineering and technical challenges will remain unsolved - e.g. renewable energy, global warming, pollution, eco-cars and buildings, sustainable farming, surgical equipment and appliances.

Schools are invited to nominate their best Design & Technology students in Year 11 for an Arkwright Scholarship award as they embark on their A Level studies. Each Scholarship, funded by industry and charitable trusts, provides the student with self confidence and self worth; improved careers prospects; funding to enhance their D&T studies; mentoring and support; access to career awareness days, work experience and networking opportunities; possible sponsorship through University.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To award 250 or more Arkwright Scholarships from September 2011.

» To encourage as many schools as possible to put forward their best Year 11 D&T students for a Scholarship before Friday 21 January 2011.
» To invite the very best applicants to an interview at selected Universities across the UK in March/April 2011
» To raise sufficient funds to support 250 or more Scholarships from September 2011 at £2,000 each

    What success will look like

Success will be...increasing the number of schools taking part in the scheme and the number of Scholarships awarded.

  • Impact

The project will be a success if all our Scholars achieve their potential and go on to University to study a design/engineering degree. We would also hope that more young people choose to study Design & Technology in Year 10/11, and then apply to become an Arkwright Scholar. We would like to see Scholars going on to contribute towards the success of British industry in the world market.

Insufficient schools may put forward applicants for scholarships. We are constantly promoting our Scholarships to existing and new schools, encouraging them to participate. Scholarships raise awareness of Design & Technology careers within schools, and each Scholarship also provides the Scholar's D&T department with extra funding, helping them to improve their facilities for students.

Scholars and donors are invited to meet up at our annual awards day at the start of the Scholarship. Scholars are encouraged to keep in touch with their donor. 1st and 2nd year reports are sent to us by the school and scholar, and we then send a report to the donor.
