Your Call: national telephone counselling service

Your Call the first free Scotland wide telephone counselling service staffed by disabled people, who work with disabled adults

The project objectives of Your Call are: improved quality of life for service users; improved choice and control, equality of access to counselling

  • Need


    Your Call wants to support disabled people with a range of neurological conditions and complex needs including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME, Post-Polio Syndrome, blindness and partially sighted, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, MS and Friedrichs ataxia: all of which are made more challenging for our clients by rural isolation, financial poverty, a lack of locally based accessible counselling services, mobility issues and some counselling services do not have personal experience of disability


    A telephone counselling service is accessible from clients own home, it can reach into every community, there is no need for groups of people living in the same community to have similar needs, transport is no longer a barrier, it is free at point of access and clients do not have to wait longer than 1 month for an appointment, and counsellors are disabled people who have been trained to professional standards

    50 people with long term conditions will have improved quality of life

    » we will recruit and train pool of 10 disabled counsellors

    improved health and mental well being for each indiviudal based on their own circumstances and goals.

    a `distance travelled form’ which is completed by the client with the support of the counsellor at the beginning and again at the end of the counselling relationship will measure a client’s personal journey from the beginning to the end of the counselling process and gives us strong evidence of each individual’s progress and personalised benefits.


    lack of awareness of Your Call by potential clients - sent out mailing to over 200 local groups, every NHS authority in Scotland and Voluntary Council Service in Scotland.

    Organised a national conference in OCtober 2010 to raise public awareness of service.

    lack of disabled volunteers willing to be counsellors _ we have already recruited and training 10 disabled people to professional standards

    lack of systems & process - we have already piloted servcie in Edinburgh to identify issues

    Although we are based in Edinburgh, Your Call can reach into every home in Scotland from the largest city to the smallest croft


    we will support one of the poorest, most vulnerable groups in society disabled people and those with long term conditions. It is widely recognised that they disabled people are affected by financial and social isolation: A third of households with a disabled person live on less than £6000 income per year and one in five families with a disabled child live on under £200 per week income.

    Many also live in rural isloation with a lack of transport or appropriate services

    Why Us?

    The Lothian Centre for Inclusive Living (LCiL) was established in 1991 as a user-controlled membership organisation providing a range of practical and accessible services to support disabled people exercise choice and to take control of their lives and live independently in the community: for example last year Grapevine our information service dealt with more than 2450 inquiries and won the Breakthrough UK Independent Living Award for Accessible Information .
