Project information

Frozen Ark Project

We are trying to preserve the cells and DNA from endangered animals so that the information in their living tissues is saved for the future. This will probably allow future generations to resurrect species that have gone extinct.

This is an ongoing project.

  • Need

Animal species are dying out at an unprecedented rate. The current round of extinctions is largely created by mankind, because of the increase in human populations and its effect on the planet’s ecosystems. Global warming is a major contributor to this destruction. Despite the best efforts of conservationists, thousands of extinctions are happening.

Samples are taken from captive breeding programmes, zoos and wild population. Cells are frozen and DNA is extracted and preserved. This protects the vital information that defines a species indefinitely.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide resources of material for scientific research.

    » Establish a resource database.

    Providing the resources :)

    Aim 2

To promote the creation of centres worldwide for conserving viable cells, DNA and RNA.

» Lobby research institutions and governmental bodies.

Measured by the number of partner insitutions/

    Aim 3

To develop the best methods of collecting samples from the different animal groups.

» Maintain a database of methods.

    A database of methods.

    Aim 4

To establish a panel of experts for each major animal group to oversee its sampling.

    » Establish the panel.

    A group of experts.

    Aim 5

To provide a source of material to combat the loss of diversity in conservation programmes.

    » Establish a database.

The preservation of the cells and information needed to recreate extinct animals.

A lack of ongoing funding. We are seeking to gather an international consortium who will carry on this important work in this event.

We provide four newsletters a year. We can also provide individual updates for large donors.

  • Background

We are based at the University of Nottingham. This provides us with the scientific base necessary for the project,

The animals. Future generations of naturalists. Future population of the world.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are the best placed of any charity in the UK to carry out this work. We have assembled an international team of advisors and have the backing of London Zoo and the Natural History Museum.
