Charity information: Young Music Makers of Dyfed
Music composition is the Cinderella of the curriculum. The Young Composer of Dyfed programme aims to redress this imbalance.
There are two elements to our programme,
• educational, running between September and January; and
• competitive, entered in October, with entries received in February and those chosen, by a professional composer engaged as adjudicator, invited in April to a day of masterclasses, a public concert of their music by a professional ensemble.
to improve the quality of musical composition among young people, under 22 in the area.
Activities» We provide an educational process in schools throughout 3 counties and offer masterclasses for young people offering compositions.
Success will be: to hear pieces of music by young people from West Wales being played by professional ensembles as part of their repertoire.
To encourage young people with talent to persue a career in composition.
Activities» We provide one to one masterclasses with an appointed resident composer and a separate composer selects the best pieces submitted for performance.
» A professional ensemble perform the pieces for a public audience and one young person is commissioned to write a piece for future performance.
Success will be: to see young people developing into professional Welsh composers.
Wales will be seen as a nation which produces many fine contemporary composers.
