Bursary & Assisted Funding for your JST Voyage

The JST invites all those who are unable to raise the full voyage fee to apply for assisted funding. In order to do this we need to raise bursary funds so that we can continue to change the lives of over 2000 people a year.

Our ethos is that everybody should have the opportunity to sail!

  • Need

Voyages vary in price depending upon the number of days, the destinations and other factors. It cost the JST in the region of £980 per person for an average week long voyage. We provide an automatic subsidy of 40% on the actual cost of our voyages for everyone who sails with us keeping the average brochure price of a week’s voyage to around £650. On top of that we can than provide an additional bursary. Our voyages need to be non elitist and affordable for all, so everyone can sail.

This project will hopefully encourage people to donate towards our bursary funding programme. Your donation will allow us to have the financial security to keep offering this large subsidy and continue providing the additional bursaries for those who need additional funding, really making a huge impact. This is so important for the JST and with your support we can continue to offer subsidised voyages at an affordable price for all.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide bursaries for voyage crew to make our voyages non elitist and affordable for all

» We send out approximately 30 appeals a month to Charitable Trusts and Foundations, on average one third of these are for bursary funding.

    What success will look like

Success will be measured not only by the amount we raise and provide in bursaries, but also by the ability to keep promoting voyage brochure prices at an affordable price.

    Aim 2

To provide assisted voyage funds (A/V) for those who need additional financial support in 2011

» This fund is critically important and is used only in exceptional cases for additional financial support. Appeals to Trusts are the main income source

    What success will look like

Success will be achieved if we are able to provide these restricted funds whenever necessary, without having to divert voluntary income from income streams.

  • Impact

If the JST can have the financial strength to successfully advertise subsidised voyages, continue to provide bursaries for first time sailors and provide our A/V for those who need additional funding in order to sail with us, it will allow the Trust to concentrate and work hard to fundraise on other equally important areas and promote the the JSTs unique qualities further afield. This success will be demonstrated by having increased occupancy rates on the ships and improved feedback.

The 3rd sector is now beginning to feel the strain of last years depression and global economic downturn. One result of this is Charitable Trusts and Foundations are reviewing their grant giving policies, and in many cases reducing the amount they so generously give. The consequence of this is that Charitable Trusts are receiving far more applications than in previous years from Charities. Reduced grant givings would dramatically effect the bursary amounts the JST are available to provide.

When Charitable Trusts and individuals donate their money, in most cases part of the grant terms and conditions have to include 6 monthly feedback reports. The JST understands the importance of these and submits reports highlighting who has benefited, pictures and any recent news about the JST.

  • Background

Our two ships spiritual home is Southampton. This is their port of registry and we proudly bear the cities name on the stern of the ships. The ships spend the summer months around the UK, with one ship spending its time in the north and on the east coast, and the other ship sailing along the south coast and around Cornwall into the Irish Sea. During the winter both ships head to warmer climates, namely the Caribbean and Canary Islands. We welcome people of all nationalities on-board.

Anyone over the age of 16 can sail with us and we can take people from all over the UK and further afield. We aim to take an equal mix of able bodied and physically disabled crew on each trip with a maximum of 40 people on each voyage. We strive to achieve integration on levels such as age, background, religion, culture and gender. Crewing a tall ship is a challenge for anyone, but at the Jubilee Sailing Trust we prove that with teamwork and understanding this challenge can be met.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

The results of the work we do speak for themselves. Since 1978 we have taken over 37,000 people to sea, 16,500 with a physically disability of which 5,000 people were wheelchair users.

97% of the voyage crew rated the JST experience as good/excellent
87% of voyage crew said the voyage made them more aware of what can be achieved by a mixed ability team in a well designed environment
84% said they had a greater understanding of how obstacles faced by people with disabilities can be removed.
