  • Need

To be a youth programme that is as relevant tomorrow as it is today we need to help participants and young people with little or no experience of the Award or other youth organisations to gain experience and knowledge of youth policies and agandas', enable them to meet like minded young people and take their experiences back to their communities thereby helping to inform youth policy and promote non-formal educational opportunities, as well as the Award Programme.

Every three years the International Award Association hosts the International Gold Event. The International Gold Event is the premier global youth event of the Association. It is open to selected participants (Gold Award holders) from all of the Association's 62 National Award Authorities and is the venue for election of the 12 youth representatives at International Council. We propose for the first time in the history of the Association to invite a delegate from 15 key countries to the event.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide developmental opportunities for young people giving them the opportunity to attend the event

» - identify one youth delegate from each of our 15 priority countries and secure their flights to and from Kenya and pay their delegate fees
» - through workshops and seminars enable them to participate in steering the Award and meet like-minded young people
» - experience the opportunity to complete sections of their Award Programme
» - take their experiences back to their home countries and communities helping to inform youth policy and promote non-formal educational opportunities

Success will be welcoming 15 youth representatives who will participate in the event, learn about the Award, participate in the Award and represent their countries and organisation

    Aim 2

Provide developmental opportunities for Gold Award holders

» - identify 5 Gold Award holders from those selected who can't afford to attend and secure their flights to and from Kenya and pay their delegate fees
» - through workshops and seminars enable them to participate in steering the Award and meet like-minded young people

Success will be welcoming 5 Gold Award holders who will represent their countries, learn about the importance of capacity building, leadership skills and the areas impacting youth

    Aim 3

One member of the Association's Programme Team to undertake a recce to Kenya to support the event

» - they will travel to Kenya to help design and plan the event, participate in meetings with potential sponsors, approve the venue, help devise plans

Success will be a secured venue, support from local people, the government and other stakeholders for the event, a well planned and executed event, local interest in the Programme

  • Impact

The project will enable young people to come to together and share their experiences, improve self esteem, develop a sense of responsibility to others and to the broader society, inform, impact and influence policy at a national, regional and global level through the opportunity to participate in a youth development framework like the Award which works with multiple stakeholders to address global youth development and policy issues

    - A political crisis in Kenya - the government is stable and at present represents no risk to the event being cancelled
    - A lack of young people coming forward from other youth organisations to participate in the event. We have a long and established history as an non-formal education programme for young people and work closely with partners on the ground to ensure a quality Award Programme. As such we do not expect that there will be young people unwilling to use this opportunity.

Funders of this project will receive a report 6 months and one year after the event which will include how participants will use the opportunities gained to make a difference in their communities and how they will work with Award teams and other organisation to influence youth development and policy
