“Increasing the mobility of people in Reading”

ReadiBus aims to purchase a replacement bus for its fleet of vehicles to enable people with restricted mobility in Reading, who have difficulties in using conventional public transport, to continue to be able to use our service.

The project will take the length of time it takes to secure the funding for the replacement bus

  • Need

The problems are divided into two key areas, these being the need to continue to provide a dial-a-ride bus service for people with restricted mobility in Reading and the continual need to have a fleet of buses that are reliable and efficient to match the increasing demand for ReadiBus and the growing number of users registering with the service. Our organisation has to continually replace the buses in the fleet to enable ReadiBus to continue to offer a service of the highest standard.

The purchase of a replacement bus for our fleet of vehicles will enable our organisation to continue to provide a door-to-door bus service for people with restricted mobility in Reading. This will enable users to continue to experience reduced feelings of isolation, maintain independence and increase confidence. With this, we are further enabled to meet the increased demand and expectation being placed on our organisation with a new and reliable bus being launched into the fleet.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Purchase a replacement bus for our fleet of vehicles.

» Fundraise through a variety of methods, including The Big Give, applications to charitable trusts and sponsored runners in the Reading Half Marathon.

By the length of time it takes to acquire the funding to purchase a replacement bus for ReadiBus and ultimately if our organisation is able to purchase one.

  • Impact

The project will enable ReadiBus to continue to operate to a level of the highest standard and quality into the future by matching increasing user demand and expectation through maintaining the reliability and efficiency of our fleet of buses.

We will demonstrate the success of this project through the launch of the bus into the fleet and then analysing the performance of the bus in the fleet in by comparing its performance with more seasoned buses in the fleet.

The time it takes to raise the necessary funding could take too long. There is always a continual need to replace buses in the fleet, however with no set deadline for the project, it is unknown how long it will take to purchase a replacement bus.

These risks can be alleviated by exploring other fundraising opportunities at the same time, for example applications to charitable trusts and signing up runners for the next Reading Half Marathon to create a more balanced portfolio.

Donors will receive a monthly email reporting on how we are progressing towards our target. As the fund increases, donors can receive further details on what stage of the bus purchase we are at. Donors can also be invited to the new bus presentation ceremony when it arrives at the fleet.

  • Background

Our project is primarily based in the Greater Reading area of Berkshire. Reading, some 40 miles west of London, has a population of 140,000 and is a key commercial centre in Southern England, providing key links with information technology and insurance services. Reading is one of the towns of greatest contrast in the country in terms of wealth and deprivation.

The beneficiaries of our project are people with restricted mobility who are unable to use the regular public transport buses in Reading. The majority of our users are those who are elderly (75% of elderly people make up our total number of users) or those who travel in a wheelchair (31% of journeys made in 2009/10 were made in a wheelchair on ReadiBus.) Despite this, our service is available to anyone of any age with a restricted mobility.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Without our organisation, people with restricted mobility in Reading would have great difficulties or no access in getting out and about to retain their independence.

Furthermore, our organisation was one of the first of its kind after its inception in October 1981. With the knowledge we have built up of providing our service for the last 29 years, we are well placed to identify the needs of our users to provide the best possible service to them.
