Beveridge Education and Training

Foundations School in Dhaka. It is a non-profit concern and will provide destitute and underprivileged children with basic education and help them enjoy their childhood in an institutional setting with secular democratic values. Priority for parents whose income is less than 2,500 BDT per month

  • Need


    Poor families in Bangladesh are not able to afford to pay the fees for education and instead we find very young children taking up jobs to earn money whilst other stay idle on street begging. SWBF would like children to obtain essential skills so that the future is brighter without the awareness of a brighter future. SWBF believes education is the key to success. Those who will take small steps today are able to walk in the future and live a better and prosperous life.


    The children will learn Bangla, English, mathematics, general knowledge and religions of God (Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judism etc as exist in South East Asia). SWBF would like to instill basic skills so that young people will have a chance to do something better. The school is fee free and will create a new generation of people who will have the ability to find better employement opportunities and increase earnings to take themselves out of vicious circles of poverty

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Places are aimed at children aged 5–12 years of age usually living with or without their families


    » Rent a suitable and safe teaching room for up to 30 pupils with chairs and tables. Pupils will be provided with books and stationary for learning.
    » Involve local teachers to provide teaching materials and participate in class with children. For example, cover topics and create quiz or exams.

    What success will look like

    Success be measured in providing free education to 100 elderly by end 2011, involving local chairpersons and support from other educational institutions assisting the cause.

  • Impact


    The project will re-enforce the importance of education in our community and make sure children receive basic learning. For those families who are unable to pay fees are on the poverty line get a chance to seek aid for their chilldren to improve skills and to bring in higher households incomes in future. In practice, create long term and skillful labour for the locals. We can demonstrate the success by evaluting 25 children and their positive outcomes and monitor feedback from three teachers


    The risks are that we can run out of funding and therefore unable to continue providing classes. We are building partnerships with other charities who share the same ethos as SWBF who may provide funding or continue as joint venture. SWBF in the meantime will be looking to invest in land and property to bring in additional incomes for current and future pojects.


    Poject funders will receive audited financial reports on a yearly basis outlineing the activities the foundation has been pursuing over the period. They will also be receiving regular emails on the project and outcomes. A foundation newsletter will be provided to them as a 3 monthly report.

  • Background


    The school has been set up in the Uttara area in Dhaka, Bangladesh. There are many areas as too where the project can expand. SWBF chose this area st start the pilot project through a referal from an esteemed local volunteer who has wanted to aid the slum children for a number of years. The School sit on the South side of the Uttara where the majority of the population are living below the subsistance level. free education for these group is essential for thhe children to obtain a better future.


    The population of Dhaka city currently stands around 12.8millions where almost 67% has Lower household income. There are three main groups that will benefit from this project. Firstly, the services users, the families of the users who previously failed to give this care to thier elder loved ones and the young educated Care assistants who now have a dignified profession to offer. An overall benefit for a country of Bangladesh which has achieved democratic government after a long struggle.

    Why Us?

    Care, respect and dignity for vulnerable people lie at the heart of the Foundation’s work. It has many years experience in this area and in fighting poverty through its staff and Management Board members as well as through Majlish Homecare Services that has been operating in the London for over 10 years. The experience and knowledge gained in the UK through this work is being applied to other countries to help alleviate the distress and preserve the dignity of people.
