Laptops for Lattitude Global Volunteering
To distribute 30 laptops to our Local Representatives worldwide in order to uphold effective communication between them and our volunteers, staff, Programme Managers, host organisations and others. This will ensure the sustainability of our programmes and improve relationships between all parties.
Charity information: Lattitude Global Volunteering
Due to time differences and high international call rates, email is the most appropriate form of communication we use. Currently, most of our Local Representatives use Internet Cafés or friends’ PCs. Others use PCs that were distributed to them by us many years ago and that are so dated they struggle to perform to a satisfactory level. This can often lead to volunteer Local Representatives feeling isolated and undervalued and our volunteers abroad do not feel as supported as we would like.
By supplying each Local Representative with a laptop, we can make sure it is always possible to communicate with them in a timely manner. If any problems arise, all parties can be made aware as soon as possible without unnecessary cost or inconvenience. It will ensure our volunteer Local Representatives feel valued and appreciated. Volunteers being able to contact their Local Representatives quickly and easily will help to resolve problems faster and develop stronger relationships between them.
Each Local Representative will receive a laptop to work from by the end of 2011.

What success will look like
Success will be...each Local Representative using their laptop to full capacity and less time spent travelling to Internet Cafés etc.
Less time/money spent on inefficient forms of communication. Local Representatives will be easier to contact and any problems that arise can be dealt with quickly. Local Representatives will feel more valued and will be more likely to continue supporting Lattitude Global Volunteering, resulting in further sustainability of our programmes. Volunteers will feel more supported during their placements and will be more likely to return to the UK with positive stories to share with future volunteers.
Once the laptops have been received there may be difficulties getting technical help should any problems arise. Should this be the case, we are able to give telephone support from the UK or organise for assistance in-country should the problem be more serious. We will also avoid expensive shipping costs by organising for the Programme Managers for each country taking the laptops with them when they go on their annual visit.
We will pass on feedback from Local Representatives to show how invaluable they will find the laptops and we will also be able to show evidence for saving costs by switching from international phone calls to email.

The laptops will be sent to 30 Local Representatives who are based around the world. Countries in which they are based include Argentina, Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Malawi, Mexico, Tanzania and Vanuatu. The project will be administered from our Head Office in the UK.
The Local Representatives who will receive the laptops are the primary beneficiaries. The volunteers we send overseas will also benefit from a more efficient service from the organisation, and future volunteers will benefit indirectly due to cost savings which will result in Lattitude Global Volunteering being able to keep fees as low as possible.
Lattitude Global Volunteering was founded in 1972 and has since been successfully offering young people life-changing volunteering experiences overseas. We were one of the first international volunteering providers and coined the term ‘gap year’. Over the years we have enabled some 35,000 young people to realise their overseas volunteering ambitions. We are founding members of the Year Out Group which aims to ensure a high standard of care if provided to young people considering a gap year.
