Costs Associated with Exercise Classes

To meet the on costs of providing 25 hours of excercise classes each week for people aged 50 or more who live in Hackney . The statutory sector meet the immediate running costs but do not make any contribution to core salaries or rent.

    Promotion of good health and physical and mental well being amongst people aged 50 or more and the prevention of poor Health


    By providing 22 hours of excercise classes every week, plus an environment for older people to meet each other

    What success will look like

    Success will be...that the classes continue and are attended on average by 10 people per class

  • Impact


    The essence of this project is that it promotes good health and prevents the development of ill health. The demonstration of success will be numbers attending but also we will conduct regular user surveys


    Withdrawal of funding for the activity components of the classes - we are assured that these classes wil be funded

  • Background


    Dalston in Hackney. We are based in Dalston Methodist Church though our project is completely separate


    Aproximately 250 people use our centre making about 7000 attendances every year. Hackney is a very deprived borough with all the wards being in the worst 10% for deprivation. The are high levels of income and housing poverty exctremely high levels of obesity and illness , particularly , for older people, diabetes hogh blood pressue and stress related conditions

    The Sharp End has been running classes of this sort since 1996 and is the most experienced provider of activities for older people in the borough
