TFN - Seeding New Groups

Giving money can be lonely and confusing. And young charities find it difficult to get funding. So TFN brings together people of different ages and income levels to fund charities at fun Dragons’ Den style events. Help us create 19 events to raise £815k for 75 young charitable projects this year.

  • Need

There is a clear need for increasing funding for the voluntary sector. UK giving is still only about 25% of that in the US and it can be particularly hard for small charities and for social entrepreneurs to raise money for innovative approaches and particularly for core activities.

In addition, donors and potential donors can find it difficult to evaluate different causes and organisations. TFN events are open to all and make philanthropy informed, accessible, engaging, and fun!

TFN events raise crucial funding for young charities. TFN keeps its own costs very low, but needs to cover staff and travel costs in order to support a variety of groups. Last year, with just 2 staff, 6 corporate partners and 50 volunteers, TFN groups in London, Oxford, Bristol, Leeds and Toronto helped 713 people at 17 events to raise £566k for 77 charities. This project will create new groups to reach a total of 800 attendees and raise £815k for 75 projects and 35,000 beneficiaries.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

The overall aim is to raise £815k by 800 attendees giving at 19 events to 75 projects.

» to create 19 funding TFN events in London, Oxford, Leeds, Bristol, Manchester, Devon and beyond.
» to engage 200 new people in active philanthropy at TFN events - enhancing awareness, volunteering and donations (from £10s to £1000s!)
» to enable 75 excellent young charitable organisations and social enterprises to become sustainable.

    What success will look like

Success will meeting these targets and ultimately helping approximately 35,000 beneficiaries.

  • Impact

Seeding New Groups will help encourage more people to become more active in their approaches to philanthropy, while helping funded organisations to survive and become sustainable. Success will be an increase in the number of TFN groups and donors, the number of change projects supported through TFN and the amount of support generated for the charities (in volunteer hours and money). We will also use qualitative feedback from donors and charities to evaluate success and improve effectiveness.

There is a risk that TFN may not reach its targets and create as many new groups and reach as many beneficiaries as we would like. TFN has a diverse range of members, supporters and partners in order to help alleviate this risk. But even a near miss would enable more charities and potential philanthropists to be reached and matched together.

Donors to this project will join TFN’s mailing list and receive invitations to all TFN events and our quarterly newsletter highlighting progress made and forthcoming events, groups and charities helped. They will also receive a special annual Funders Update tracking the specific aims.

  • Background

TFN is a charity based in London which supports groups in London, Bristol, Leeds, Oxford and Canada (Toronto). In addition, TFN's expansion will create new groups in existing areas as well as in new places such as Devon and Manchester in the UK.

TFN's aim to create social change through collective giving at its events. Beneficiaries will include individuals who wish to donate together to support innovative young charities. Beneficiaries will also include the clients of the funded organisations (in the areas of health, education, international development, environment/climate change and human rights in the UK and across the world), ranging from children in London and villagers in Nepal to everyone affected by climate change.
