  • Need

    Need

Children in Africa are the innocent victims of war, famine, poverty and disease. 40 Million are orphans and many have no one to care for them. For those living in the slums, there is no money for food and rarely a hospital nearby. Poor diets, weakened immune systems and unclean living conditions often lead to unnecessary death. Due to lack of money or transport school enrolment rates are very low, which contributes to a lack of employment opportunities and street begging.

    Solution

Beautiful Gate supports vulnerable children and families in Africa by setting up community based day centres, pre-schools, crisis care for AIDS orphans and foster care programmes.

We currently operate in three countries – South Africa, Lesotho and Zambia

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To restore the capacity of the community and of families to care for their children

    Activities

» We reunify children with family members where possible
» We provide support in the form of home visits, grant application assistance, counselling, spiritual upliftment, food parcels and school fee assistance

Children will be placed back into a safe and loving family home within the community.

    Aim 2

To provide a temporary home for those for whom it has not been possible to find family members

    Activities

» We provide temporary residential care (crisis care) in a safe and loving environment at our community based children’s homes

Children will receive the health care, educational support and love they need to live with dignity whist waiting to be placed with a family.

    Aim 3

To place orphans without any family into families within the community

    Activities

» We run foster care programmes in conjunction with the local governments.

Families will be identified in the communty who can foster the children.

    Aim 4

To provide quality education to orphans and vulnerable children

    Activities

» We provide pre-school education for children in preparation for going to school
    » We run community schools
» We provide after school care, homework support, computer training and sports activities
» We run holiday clubs to ensure children get lots of exercise, enjoy their holiday and learn some life-skills along the way

Children will be attending school and eventually become active leaders in society.

    Aim 5

To collaborate with Governments and other community based organisations

    Activities

» We advocate for the rights of children and the establishment of effective adoption/foster care programmes
» We network with any other community based organisations in the communities in which we are working in order to ensure we are accountable to each other

We will be acting on shared agendas with the government and other community based organisations.

  • Impact

    Impact

Children can grow up in a safe and loving home and have the chance to become all that they are capable of being without the barriers of disease, poverty, lack of education or lack of healthcare.

Our success will be demonstrated by the number of children we have placed into safe and loving homes, the number of children attending school, the number of children with HIV who are on ARV medication and the number of children attending our community based child development programmes.

    Risk

Our biggest risk is financial dependancy. Without the support of our donors we could not pay our staff or continue to run our programmes.

The Global financial crisis has increased this risk substantially. We have had to make significant cut backs in our budgets in order to ensure our survival. We are however very fortuante to have a wide circle of supporters who have not yet failed us and we always ensure we have at least six months worth of operational funds in reserve.

    Reporting

Donors will receive newsletters and updates throughout the year keeping them up to date with our progress.

Regular donors will receive updates on specific children that they are supporting through our sponsor a child programmes.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Beautiful Gate has been established since 1994. The first project was for street children in Cape Town. When the founders saw the devastating impact AIDS was having on children in South Africa, they set up an AIDS care centre which has helped hundreds of children to find a home and enabled them to live longer with the AIDS virus. Using the knowledge and expertise gained over sixteen years, they have now grown into an association with programmes in South Africa, Lesotho and Zambia.
