To provide specialist support for children who have communication and behaviour problems. To employ a Language, communication and behaviour support worker to observe, evaluate need and put together a plan to help the children before they start school.

PELICAN CHILDRENS CENTRE
We have identified the huge problem of children aged 2 to 5 years who cannot communicate, their speech and language is delayed which leads to frustration and negative behaviour. This also impacts on their family life so we aim to improve their language skills and reduce their negative behaviour.
By employing a support worker to plan for each child's needs and implement activities on a one to one basis to improve their communication and behaviour problems. This is an ongoing problem which seems to have worsened over the past 3 years.
We hope that by the time the children start school theirr language skills will improve and this will decrease the frustration they feel because they cannot make themselves understood
To support children with communication and language difficulties
Activities» Identify need by observation, evaluation and plan activities to support this need.
» One to one direction from a trained practitioner who will initiate activities and programmes for each individual child - talking/listening skills.
Success will be...improving childrens speech and language by the time they go to school so they are ready to be active learners
Decrease the number of children frustrated by lack of communication skills causing behaviour problem
Activities» Behaviour and anger management programmes.
Success will be...improve the behaviour of the children by supporting them and enabling them to take part in school activities thus readying them for future skills
Children need to communicate effectively to leand and develop so the earlier this project starts the better for their future.
We will keep records of the childrens progress through learning journals and individual learning plans so no child will slip through the net and be left without the proper support from loving and caring staff
The risks could be non support from parents/carers but we have been here for a long time and have the support of our families and local schools and organisations so we can always call on these for help if needed.
We will keep records on the childrens progress and report these to our donors. As a small charity we have very good programmes in place for reporting and keeping records which we have built up over the years. Our donors are also invited, on an open door policy, to visit anytime to see what we do.

We are located in Pelican Childrens Centre, 66 Saltash Road, Keyham, Plymouth Devon PL2 1QS
The Centre is in Devonport which is classed as a deprived area, lots of unemployment, single parents and high drug/alcahol problems and at the moment 80 families use the Centre every week. We are open to all and cater for children with additional needs and disabilities. There are staff trained in British signing and makaton.
We try to provide for every need and have recently opened a baby room for children aged 3 months to 2 years. Pelican was started by three Mums because of need in the area.
The Centre has been open for 13 years and is at the centre of our community. We have built up a good reputation and trust for the care we offer and, working with other groups, have initiated other projects in the area with our staff and volunteers which are still going after 13 years so we have the stamina and dedication to carry this project.

Without the support of the parents/carers and the enthusiasm of the children the project would be possible but not the success we plan
The Communication, Language And Behaviour Practitioner
