Change a Life Through Education
The Anglo-Thai Foundation is helping to break a cycle of poverty in Isaan, Northeast Thailand, by supporting the schooling of impoverished children, from primary school right through, if they make the grade, to university level.
May 2014 - May 2015
Charity information: Anglo-Thai Foundation
The northeastern provinces which constitute Isaan are Thailand’s poorest region. Drought in summer and floods in the rainy season mean that only one rice harvest is possible each year (where the rest of Thailand manages two). Parents have to seek seasonal work in the towns, leaving their children in the care of elderly relatives barely able to support themselves.
State education in Thailand is theoretically free, but every year many children never make it to school because their families cannot afford even the cost of school uniforms, exercise books, or transport.
Relatively modest annual grants enable children to access the state education to which they are entitled. Substantial grants are made to students in further and higher education.
We are seeking sponsorship for 44 children whose applications we have examined and approved.
Activities» This need is the basis of our challenge funding campaign on The Big Give in December 2013. An annual Thai-British Fair and raffle provide other funds.
What success will look like
In the long term, the best demonstration of success is a graduation photo. In the short term, annual reports to supporters update them on the progress of their child or children.
We are making a contribution, through the generosity of our sponsors, to raising the educational level of the people of Isaan. A steady stream of Anglo-Thai Foundation scholars have graduated over the years from vocational colleges and universities. Many write to say that without the Foundation's support they would never have achieved this success.
The Anglo-Thai Foundation minimises risks to the continuity of its funding by strenous ongoing fund-raising efforts and maintaining a stabilisation fund. Financial monitoring is in accordance with the requirements of the UK Charity Commission, and UK-based trustees travel at their own expense to Thailand each year to supervise the grant awards.
Supporters receive an annual newsletter, invitations to Thai festivals in the UK and an annual report on the progress of the child or children they are supporting. The Foundation’s website at www.anglo-thai.org provides up-to-date information.

Located in the arid Northeast of Thailand, Isaan’s problems have historically been given low priority by the central government. This has led to social unrest over many decades with, at one time, support for communist insurgency and, more recently, the ‘Red Shirt’ protest movement.

The Anglo-Thai Foundation respects the culture of Isaan and enjoys strong local support. A majority of its trustees are currently Thai, and this avoids many of the problems associated with Western charities operating in Thailand.
