No Child Will Be Left Behind

Every child in an institution dreams of having a loving family and a home of their own. Our Big Idea will make dreams come true for 500 children, and many more in years to come. We will move children out of orphanages and into loving family homes. When the doors close no child will be left behind.

  • Need

Most children in orphanages are not orphans but victims of poverty and a lack of support for families in difficult situations. Institutions have been shown to be very damaging to children. In order to grow up into happy and healthy adults with good life opportunities, each child needs the love and care of a family. Children who grow up in institutions have a high chance of spending their adult life in abusive relationships, living in poverty or in prison. High numbers will commit suicide.

Hope and Homes for Children is closing child institutions and finding local families for children in Central and Eastern Europe and we will soon close our first institution in Africa. Our objective is that 'no child will be left behind' and we find a place for every child, no matter what problems they have.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To close damaging child institutions in Central and Eastern Europe and Africa

» Close damaging orphanages and wherever possible reunite children with their birth or extended families.
» When reintegration is not an option, we organise a caring family placement by way of fostering or local adoption.
» Some children do not cope well in a family placement. Instead, Small Family Homes enable them to experience care that is much closer to family life.

    What success will look like

Success will be... Our Big Idea will help us to close 7 orphanages in 7 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Africa and help 7 governments to reform their childcare systems.

    Aim 2

To prevent children from entering bleak, state-run orphanages

» Create support services to prevent child abandonment such as day care centres for disabled children and mother and baby units for vulnerable mothers.
» Train local professionals to identify families at risk and provide them with the individual support they need.
» Work in partnership with governments and local authorities to reform child care services and create sustainable change for future generations.

    What success will look like

Success will be...working with 500 children to move them out of institutions or prevent them entering. All the children will be moved into or remain in local families.

  • Impact

Our Big Idea will not only make a difference in 2011, but it will help us to create systemic change in all the countries that we work in. This means that generations of children will have the opportunity to grow up with the love and security of a family. We will clearly be able to see the success of these projects as the numbers of children in institutions fall until there is no longer a need for child institutions at all.

In every place we work we rely on the cooperation and support of the local government. This in turn leads to a sustainable outcome. However when governments and political situations change, so can their priorities.

To combat this risk we work closely with local professionals and employ local staff. In the past we have been successful in countries where other international NGOs have been expelled. The child-focused nature of our work means we can adapt our projects to support individual needs.

At Hope and Homes for Children we feel it is important that our supporters can see the impact of their gifts. We monitor and evaluate all of our projects, as well as gather personal, life-changing stories from our beneficiaries. We have a regular newsletter, Hope, and regular updates on our website

  • Background

Hope and Homes for Children is currently working to close orphanages in Romania, Rwanda, Belarus, Ukraine, Bosnia, Moldova, Bulgaria and Sudan.

We work in some of the poorest countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Africa, some of which are recovering from war and genocide. Our Big Idea will impact children, families and their communities as our work will change the nature of childcare systems long-term. Our work empowers local professionals and project workers as they gain skills and knowledge. Ultimately the entire municipal economy in each country will benefit as funds are better invested in families rather than in institutions.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Our expertise and experience in closing institutions and reforming childcare systems in Central and Eastern Europe is unrivalled. Our pioneering method, first developed in Romania in the late 1990s, is now recognised as a best practice model by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation and we can prove that it works. Our goal of seeing Romania free of all institutions is now within our sights and we are beginning to see similar successes in the other countries in which we work .
