  • Need

Climate Change is hitting SE Asia hard. Increased typhoon activity as well as droughts are becoming all the more common. The governments of SE Asia have a program that only goes as far as adaptation and mitigation, as opposed to action against rising temperature. Our aim is to involve young people at an early age to better understand the causes and effects of Climate Change, so they can themselves generate a culture of knowledge, volunteerism and activism, debate and dialogue and finally action.

Through exhibition and printed material, our project will be used in schools, public spaces and tour SE Asia, beginning in the Mekong region. By producing a series of easy to read and engaging cartoon stories, developed through participatory practise and workshops, and in partnership with British Council and local NGOs, we aim to instigate Climate Change education throughout the region, benefitting those who will deal with consequences well into the future.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Run a series of participatory workshops with people effected by Climate Change, to proudce cartoons

» Drama, Photography, story telling, cartoon workshops in communities who have been affected by Climate Change, in order to produce real content
» Take the edited material into schools, and through participatory methodology, allow students to develop the cartoon narrative as they see it.

Success will be shown (as has been already) by having a group of individuals who learn story telling, and drama skills to produce the visual content alongside us.

    Aim 2

To hold a series of public exhibitions in cities, as well as touring the project through schools

» In collaboration with the British Council, government, local NGOs and international partners we have made, the content will be displayed as such.

Success will be having at least 2 major shows in Saigon and Bangkok

    Aim 3

To produce a published volume of the stories, to be distributed through schools in the region

» At the intitial shows, to encourage a private sponsor to fund the publication.

Success will be demostrated by a printed cartoon book, numbering in the 10s of 1000s that will be distributed throughout schools in the region

  • Impact

Primarily to encourage youth to be more aware of the consequences of climate change and how it will effect their lives. By encouraging youth to be more aware, and thus involved in volunteerism, activism and promoting innovation in their future practise, we hope that this project will be one of several that offer this form of environmental education. We don't aim to alter the climate, rather we are providing the tools for others to learn from, and thus make a future difference to their community

Time and Scientific data. To make sure that we always have plenty of time to complete the participatory workshops to the best of our and the participants' abilities. We have a team of local staff who have excelled previously in this project. Their skills are facilitators and working with young people. Our team is capable of forming a creative group of participants and getting the best out. Scientific data has come from experts in Climate Change, and this forms the base of project narrative

We have already made 2 projects our of 4. At the end of each project a report was written with visual content included. Throughout the project in the region, we always keep in touch with local offices of our major donor - the British Council and others.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Picture People has already begun this project with backing from the British Council. We have made 2 projects in Thailand and Vietnam, and this is a work in progress. Whilst in the field, we met with many NGOs and international organizations (like ADB, AusAid, DFiD, Oxfam, WWF) who agree to collaborate in various ways. In the past we have made 17 projects similar to this, over 6 years. The project is ongoing, and developing into an interesting document that illustrates the human cost of the topic
