Dosage - Dance/Health and Young Families
To diffuse the physical inactivity timebomb which costs us £8.2b per year as GPs and Local Authorities continue to localise Change4Life. 'Dosage' is an exportable dance and health model like MEND, targeting young people and their families, aimed at sustaining healthier lifestyles through dance.

Endemic physical inactivity amongst the population and the inherent cost of that inactivity to the NHS and ultimately us, the public.
Dance is a very fast growing activity at present. You can't miss it on television. But competitions churn out one winner and millions of losers. This project aims to sustain, particularly young peoples' positive interest in dance by taking it to the heart of family play as a project linked to the Change4Life initative. Cheshire Dance has developed a pilot that is gathering a strong evidence base. This needs rolling out across Cheshire (this proposal), then perhaps the country.
Sustain young peoples' and their families interest in their health through dance.
Activities» Residential activities for those most in need. Some families really benefit from an intensive starting point.
» Regular dance sessions, whether 1 night a week or a full day of dance every month, what ever suits the families.
» Do your own thing - the most recent project called 20 past 12 (2012 Games) resulted in 13,155 people performing at the same time across 117 locations
Success will be... loyal dancers and dancing families
Producing evidence of health improvement.
Activities» Involve health specialists working alongside the dance specialists who will measure in the least obtrusive but most informative way.
» Communicate changes in health over time both to the individual families but also through the collated evidence base, to the wider public.

Long term, young people and their families will be leading healthier lifestyles. This will be demonstrated through the datasets but also qualitatively through participant and practitioner testimony as well as through photogrphy and film based documents. Ultimately the cost of physical inactivity will rise less quickly and begin to fall.
People may drop out. We employ the highest possible skills base in the dance practitioners and health practitioners. These person centred professions are built upon generating and sustaining trust over a long period. If we want the best we must also be prepared to pay for the best. Quality is paramount. This is not a task for a £10/hr dance student. We will however, as we have already begun to do in the pilot, engage young practitioners through training ready for a delivery role

Target deprived areas, e.g. Ellesmere Port, West Chester, West end of Crewe, Runcorn, Speicifc estates in Cheshire East (e.g. culshaw)and Warrington (e.g. Orford Park).
Also target individual families through GP and Local Authority referral programmes.
Cheshire Dance has specialised in community dance practice (participation) for more than 30 years. We remain at the forefront of practice nationally and have already invested heavily in developing the pilot, including establishing a range of partnerships to help us embed dance and health activity in specific communities.
