Art and Music at Casa Jimmy
Music and art play an integral role in Brazilian society. Helping disadvantaged children express themselves artistically benefits self-esteem hugely, and demonstrates their potential to wider society. We will employ 1 educationalist to coordinate music lessons to upto 60 kids/yr aged from 6 to 18.

Rio is the home of many young people who suffer from the effects of extreme poverty. In particular, their life chances are frequently harmed by social stigmatization, poor education, low self-esteem/expectations and a lack of encouragement and support at home. This makes it hard for them and their communities to escape the vicious cycle of poverty and low achievement and to fulfil their potential, and makes the apparently quick and easy rewards of criminal/gang related activity hard to resist.
The Art and Music at Casa Jimmy project will teach the kids skills and show them inspiring alternatives to the crime that many disaffected young people are drawn into. We will stage presentations at 2 exhibition / concert events for their families & local residents during Casa Jimmy's 19th Anniversary & Christmas. We will use this event to help us engage with the wider Rio community, thereby raise the profile of our work, inspire our existing supporters and generate further funds for the projec
Stage two Exhibition/Concert events for Casa Jimmy's 19th Anniversary and over Christmas 2017.
Activities» Run art & music workshops so that the best pieces can be displayed or performed at the exhibition/concert. Teach the kids capoeira and to play guitar.
» Involve our beneficiaries’ schools. To display and/or perform their pupils' work. We will teach kids attending Casa Jimmy, capoeira & to play guitar.
» Involve local schools and other local organizations in the event to build links between our beneficiaries and ourselves with the local community.
» Publicise the event to maintain existing engagement and support and to encourage new supporters to help our work. And, to attract more kids to attend.
What success will look like
Success will be having the kids perform at the events attended by their family and local organizations and using the events to promote our work and engage more kids in the project.
It will greatly strengthen our links with the local community in a positive way and an enjoyable event will further help to gain local support. We'll demonstrate this success by maintaining these links and organizing further similar events. The event will allow us to acquire new measurable sources of support and involve a greater number of children and adolescents.
The main risk that we foresee is not receiving enough support to be able to produce and adequately organise the exhibitions/concerts. Or, not have the children well trained for the events. To deal with this, we have set a sensible timeline and will ensure that the event is properly promoted and the children well trained. We have received offers of pro-bono PR advice in Brazil that we intend to take advantage of.
In the absence of specific request for feedback, we will report to donors as to progress on a regular basis by email, via our facebook and twitter pages. If donors require any other form of reporting we will do all we can to meet their request.

Casa Jimmy is located in the Santa Teresa district of Rio. In the early 20th century it was a very smart part of Rio but its wealth has since declined substantially. Now, whilst it has a reputation as a bohemian enclave in Rio, two of its main features are some notorious favelas and the extreme poverty of many of its residents.
The primary beneficiaries will be the kids involved in the projec who leave in the nearby favelas/communities in Santa Teresa, Rio de JAneiro and surrounding areas. Other beneficiaries will be the wider Rio community as they learn more about our work, and about the talent, energy and potential of kids who are written-off by many wealthier Brazilians. Finally, the events will help us to benefit more young people by providing us with further fundraising opportunities.
Casa Jimmy opened in 1998, and has successfully held a number of similar events in the past. We are well known in Rio, and Task Brasil has links with local schools and local organizations that will help us deliver the event.
