Awe and wonder! A Children’s Theatre Programme

Quicksilver will collaborate with local schools, families, early years groups and community centres from their base The New Diorama Theatre to develop a theatre programme involving participatory projects, theatre experiences, outreach to inspire a new generation of theatre goers.

  • Need


    1) Lack of access to Arts and Culture to the local community particularly under 15 year olds
    2) Lack of relationships between stake holder groups within the community with a focus on the diverse ethnic groups in the area.
    3) Isolation of the elder generation within society


    By offering Awe and Wonder! Will address the above problems by:
    1) Building bridges between the community and Arts and Culture.
    2) Developing and sustaining different relationships between
    - Community groups and centres
    - Theatre companies
    - Education institutions
    3) Introducing intergenerational projects using the New Diorama Theatre and Awe and Wonder! as a focus to bring different generations together
    4) Creating an accessible community space for celebration and theatre.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To run a years children’s theatre programme based at the New Diorama Theatre


    » We will produce one new Quicksilver production for children under 8 – in consultation with local children.
    » Invite 12 of the best companies from around the UK and internationally to present their work.
    » We will run one youth arts project in relationship with Samuel Lithgow Youth Centre.
    » We will run one intergenerational project with The Third Age Project (TAP).

    What success will look like

    Success will be 600 new young people and their families attend the theatre. 120 local community members participate in the outreach programmes and 70% of performances sell out.

  • Impact


    Established a curiosity and appetite in the community for the arts who will then want to engage more with theatre, culture and each other. We will set up a ‘critical voices’ intergenerational panel of representives of these participants who will feed back to Quicksilver the sort of programmes they would like to see happen in the New Diorama. We would aim to have doubled our outreach by the second year and again in the third year of running Awe and Wonder!


    Finance of the programme – this will require constant monitoring and fundraising to ensure success.

    Quicksilver is a company new to programming. Whilst we have extensive knowledge of the industry we need to learn the skill of programming. This will be done by attending industry events and festivals for programmers, approaching current receiving houses and obtaining mentorship and advice from successful programmers.


    We will send a monthly update email to all donors. A newsletter with more detailed information 3 times a year. We will also maintain a blog on our website with exciting up to date information as it happens. This will have a section for the participants to comment, post pictures etc.

  • Background


    Quicksilver’s new home, the New Diorama Theatre, is in West Euston where the community covers a highly diverse population of about 12,000 people many on low incomes, including many of Bengali and South Asian ethnic origin. As well as families there is a notable proportion of population over 60. There are limited opportunities within the community for cross cultural and inter generational activities. This highly diverse population is at the heart of this project.
