Our work already shows that music changes lives. We will go to the most disadvantaged communities where young people are at risk of giving up. Working with them and their elders, we will use music-making to thrill and inspire. Opening doors to creative futures, better life chances & the Big Society

  • Need


    Although soundLINCS works with huge numbers of young people, we are still striving for better, deeper engagement with those living in the most challenging circumstances. We know that participating in making music raises confidence and aspirations and we want to make a difference where it will really count, in social environments where young people are marginalized. This will have a beneficial impact not only on young people but on the community gatekeepers who can make a difference for them


    We will take creative opportunities into identified communities, after developing partnerships with support agencies and community elders. Taster sessions will lead to longer-term focused activity where young people feel valued and empowered, and better resourced. It will become worthwhile to become better at communicating, risk feeling ownership and pride in their achievements. These transformative experiences will enhance community relationships as well as life chances of young participants.

    Aim 1

    We want to provide opportunities to foster creative talent in "at risk' young people.


    » Create partnerships with support networks and community gatekeepers
    » Take opportunities into communities via roadshows and taster events
    » Develop ‘Doing Zones’ where young people can access a range of music-making opportunities

    What success will look like

    Success will be...Creating 7 roadshow or taster events (1 in each Lincolnshire district ) 7 'Doing Zones' (1 in each district); at least 4 partnerships per zone;

    Aim 2

    High quality experiences will raise aspirations, confidence and skills in young people 'at risk'.


    » Offer a series of taster workshops to raise interest and awareness of the range of opportunities we can offer
    » Be led by the interests of young participants to form longer-term residencies
    » Organise sharing events where young people take centre stage in their communities and inspire others with their achievements.

    What success will look like

    Success will be...A total of 120 workshops (taster events and longer-term residencies) led by 2 music facilitators in each zone; at least 4 sharing events in each zone.

    Aim 3

    We want to create a community of ‘doers’


    » Encourage and enable young people to identify personal aspirations and ways of realizing them, including creating, performing and recording their work
    » Undertake Arts Award accreditation to Bronze, Silver and Gold standard.
    » And ensure that community elders are involved and aware of these activities by communicating achievements.

    What success will look like

    Success will be...The creation of 3 'artistic products' per zone; with up to 60% of participants attaining Arts Award accreditation. Our work will involve 3-5 community elders.

    Aim 4

    To give young people 'at risk' in Lincolnshire a voice, including developing their own activities.


    » Engaging young people through taster events and forming 'next steps' projects as a result
    » consulting young people we will be guided by them to identify gate keepers and stakeholders in their community.

    What success will look like

    Success will be...to engage over 370 young people within the project with over half of these young people completing a year long programme, gaining new skills & enhanced prospects.

  • Impact


    Individual young people will develop personal confidence, new creative skills and a greater sense of community responsibility. This will be evidenced by a sense of improved intergenerational community cohesion.
    We will demonstrate this success by inviting participants to evaluate their experiences but an important measurable outcome will be in the form of groups who seek to extend their project by accessing new funding streams, volunteering & gaining accreditation, which we will support.


    The challenges of working with hard to risk groups include: low and chaotic attendance rates, slow project development, unresponsive or unwilling gatekeepers to opportunities (adults or 'gang' leaders). Conversely demand may outstrip our ability to provide leading to disappointment.
    We will work with these young people, partner agencies and community leaders to find the best routes to engagement. Our plans are designed to tempt involvement and build bridges early on.


    An E-Newsletter will update donors on our progress and invite them to every public event delivered during the project as well as an open invitation to attend local sessions.

    The soundLINCS website will have dedicated pages to inform donors and potential donors about the project as it unfolds.

  • Background


    Our project will take place across rural Lincolnshire (3rd largest county in England) in target areas for young people at risk - for instance market towns or isolated villages with high populations of migrant workers, areas of deprivation and other minority groups.


    Direct beneficiaries will be 'at risk' young people (focusing mainly on 12-18 age group) including: Not in Education Employment or Training, Looked After Children, hard to reach young people including those with special needs, and children of migrant worker communities.
    Indirect beneficiaries will comprise the wider local community, who oftern have low expectations of young people and of their own ability to contribute to beneficial change.

    soundLINCS delivers large-scale music projects across Lincolnshire and has developed expertise in working with young people over the past 12 years. The company has formed active partnerships with a range of agencies who support 'at risk' young people and has clear ambitions to undertake more work in this area. The charity has achieved Section 11 compliance with the Child Safety Board and fields a 70-strong team of music facilitators who benefit from bespoke training to ensure appropriate skills
