Project information

Dewsbury Arts Space

Demolition of an old crumbling storage area and replace with a new 3 storey extension. This will create 'Artspace' for Dewsbury and surrounding area. During performance weeks no other activities can take place at the venue and as we have very healthy visual arts and youth sections this is not ideal

May 2010 - August 2010

  • Need

    Need

Having insufficient space for activities to run concurrently in our own premises and to avoid having to hire other venues at considerable cost and inconvenience. It will create more storage space for scenery and costumes facilitating the lending to other groups.

    Solution

By creating more working areas and improve the present facilities to service an increased annual programme of theatre, visual art and youth drama. We will develop improved set building and costume making workshops and create space for rehearsals. front of house facilities will be greatly improved to enhance the overall experience of our audience. The aim is to provide more opportunities for the community to engage in creative activities

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To replace an old worn out building with a new three storey building to give more spaces.

    Activities

» Demolition completed, new build is in progress but only to the point of a shell which will need more money to complete.

Success will be...having sufficient spaces available for the Arts Groups own use, as well as spaces for other Community Arts organisations to use.

  • Impact

    Impact

The project will for the first time enable Drama Rehearsal(s) to take place at the same time as Youth Drama Classes and for example Life Drawing Sessions as well as allowing Local History Society meetings and access for other dance or fine arts Community Groups.
Currently we cannot manage to give as much access to outside organisations as we would wish.
We will continue to foster co-operation with local Ethnic Minority Arts Groups and with local schools to aid education in Drama and Arts.

    Risk

Unexpected increases in costs have already increased the basic cost by some £10,000 and a scheme to promote 100 loans of £100 each for two years is being put in place.
Grant Aid of £50,000 from Biffaward, £25,000 from Dewsbury Partnership and £5,000 from The Garfield Weston Foundation and Donations of £30,000 from our own Members and Patrons are already secured. Sufficient reserves are held to take us to the point of completing the initial build before the increase in VAT.

    Reporting

Regular updates on progress are being made to existing donors and information for Press Release purposes as well as an ongoing photographic record is being maintained.
