Relocation of the Collective Gallery

For the last 26 years Collective has been supporting new talent.

We are now seeking support to allow us to secure our future for our stake holders. This project seeks to raise enough funds to allow us the possibility to purchase a building. Ensuring the sustainability of the organization.

  • Need


    Collective are currently in rented property and the owners want to sell it. In the current climate Collective will have difficulty finding suitable independent premises and develop. Although we have good general financial support, this places considerable pressure upon the resources of organization.
    We need a suitable to allow 140,000 people will engage with Collectives programme from 2012-2014: 33 exhibitions, 15 new commissions , 12,000 people will benefit from participatory opportunities.


    Our aim is to raise enough funds to allow us the possibility to purchase a building or develop a new space. Ensuring the sustainability of the organization and to allow us control over what premises we are in and how it is developed.
    This will allow us to develop more sustainable business models which will in turn enable us to support new artists and new projects which contribute to art form development and the cultural life of a very wide variety of people living in Scotland.

    Our aim is to purchase a fit for purpose building to sustain the organization.


    » Identify three potential sites with models of operation on each.
    » Run focus groups with stake holders to identify opportunities and risks attached to each.
    » Secure a new premises develop it to be fit for purpose.
    » Relocate to a new premises.

    What success will look like

    Success will be demonstrated by raising enough to use as a down payment to buy a property or to develop a new space. This will allow us to continue to develop our renowned work.

    To develop business models and ensure the sustainability of the organization


    » Look for premises which could offer other potential income streams such as accommodation to rent out, or social enterprise ventures.
    » Have a consultation with a sustainability consultant on long term sustainability looking at other models both nationally and internationally.
    » feed this information into the search for a new location and premises.

    What success will look like

    Success will be demonstrated by the organization completing a successful relocation to a site which is long term and developed specifically to address artists and audiences needs.

  • Impact


    The project will secure the organization, allowing it to produce exhibitions, commissions, workshops, site-specific work, performances, work in the public realm, film nights, events, conferences, seminars, publications, discussion groups. It will allow us to continuing our work in accessibility and engagement, widening access and learning, developing our national and international profile.
    The success of our activities will be measured by a series objectives and outputs, monitored by funders.


    The financial climate presents a risk to the organization. Our main risk is that we have limited options in relocation and the costs incurred affect our services to artists and audiences.
    However our main investor Creative Scotland, has committed their support to the organization by awarding a £20,000 increase in our revenue funding from 2011-2013. This should sustain our creative programme over the transition period and allow us to focus on raising funds for relocation.


    A special area on our website will have information and news. Donors will receive a regular email updates on the project, fundraising targets ongoing and forthcoming activities, and any necessary changes that have been made to the project plans. They will also be invited to a launch.

  • Background


    Collective is situated in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city. We intend to stay within Edinburgh city centre. Edinburgh is widely recognized reputation as a cultural city, a festival city and a key tourist destination Collective contributes to this as well as filling a gap in provision for a more diverse ans inclusive audience year round and also for arts graduates emerging talent and contributing to local cultural production as well as presentation.


    Collectives projects are uniquely innovative and inclusive. We have won international recognition for projects within local third sector organisations as well as cross art form projects in the local area. Our participants are not reached by other cultural provision and benefit hugely from the opportunities. Also, a main strand of our programming offers graduates their first major solo exhibition and is recognised as spotting and developing the most interesting new talent in visual art.
