Refugee Resource Centre
We are seeking 2 year funding for a part-time refugee support worker for a 3 days a week, to include operating costs and proportionate costs towards the management of these new ventures. We need to find £32,000 over three years. Supporting pregnant refugee and asylum seekr mothers & their families
October 2010 - October 2014
Charity information: Narthex Sparkhill
Our work with Refugees/Asylum Seeker pregnant women with no recourse to public funds. We provide cots, prams, baby clothes etc. from our resource centre. Our volunteer parish nurse supports mums & families through pregnancy & by home support. We offer advice & guidance, parenting support, & a safe friendly place. We partner with Red Cross, Victim Support, Refugee Council & Social Services etc. The resource centre has grown too big to be managed by volunteers, we need a paid worker to continue
A grant would enable us to extend our resource centre work. Currently it's run by a volunteer manager but the work has grown too big. A grant would pay the salary of a refugee support worker which will help us be more efficient and support even more people and agencies. The support worker will work directly with female clients and children.
To meeet the needs of destitute refugees and asylum seekers who have no access to goverment funds
Activities» Through our resource centre and drop in and a new paid support worker
» Friendship cafe, health & parenting support
» Providing volunteer opportunities to refugees and asylum seekers
Success will be providing 100 new mums with the practical and emotional support needed during pregnancy. Provide a safe meeting point in our new friendship cafe.
Reduce isolation, provide practical and medical support through our parish nurse. Provide English classes, provide parenting classes that will enable parents to raise their children safely. Provide Paediatric First aid to 30 mums with no recourse to government funding. We will demonstrate the success of those supported by monitoring reports and client feedback. Success will be supporting an extra 60 mums over three years through our new support worker
Their is a risk that the government will remove some of our clients before we are able to help them or move them to new areas in the UK. We have dealt with this by creating links in other parts of the UK where we can sign post clients to
Each client is supported to obtain the relevant type of support needed. We have at present 27 agencies referring clients to us. Our parish nurse, & resource centre manager document the needs & requirements of each client & a confidential medical record is kept. We will provide year end report.

Refugees, asylum seekers, economic migrants, low income and single parent families. This posts will provide increased support to existing clients and grow our work to a minimum of 100 more clients & extended family per annum from refugee and economic migrant communities, We have seen huge growth since we started food distribution work but it is not sustainable without paid staff. .
We have worked in the area for over 14 years and supported refugees & asylum seekers for many years. In the past 12 months we have had in excess of 120 pregnant refugee/asylum women come to us. We already work with 130-135 families and individuals a week. We are well known and have 27 agencies referring clients to us. We have staff who speak community languages. We are well known in the refugee/asylum communities who bring new clients to us also.
