Creative Ladder

Creative Ladder is a three year community arts programme, being launched in September 2010, for disadvantaged children and young people in Brighton & Hove. The aim is to provide them with learning opportunities and live art experiences with professional artists to enhance their lives.

  • Need


    In 2008 Komedia Productions (KP) hosted a childrens festival of free taster workshops in a variety of art forms, this was so successful that many had to be turned away. In particular parents of disabled children need accessible and affordable creative experiences for their children. Brighton & Hove Council have launched an arts strategy to target disadvantaged communities (non-attenders) and they see KP as unique in being able to centrally host a variety of youth activities for large numbers.


    KP is putting in place a programme of professionally run activities to develop the skills, talents and artistic expression of these disadvantaged groups. KP is contacting community groups, charities and Council services to reach specific participants, and ask them how they wish to engage and what their objectives are. These activities will be free, held centrally at the Komedia venue, and offsite reaching those who cannot come to the venue.

    Aim 1

    To enable disadvantaged children and young people to access, create and experience high quality art.


    » Run workshops in written and spoken word, comedy improvisation, music improvisation, radio production and film making.

    What success will look like

    Success will be...the enrichment of their lives, development of their self-confidence, imagination, language skills and understanding of good teamwork.

    Aim 2

    To enable children to experience live performance.


    » A series of children's theatre performances by professional artists will be run at the Komedia venue and off-site e.g. local children's hospital wards

    What success will look like

    Success will be...series of children's theatre performances for parents and children who previously have not attended. Development of the children's interest and engagement.

    Aim 3

    To enable young people to experience live performance and media skills, to develop their own talent.


    » Workshops in comedy and music improvisation, and radio productions and film making with local professional artists and organisations.

    What success will look like

    Success will be...series of comedy, music, radio and tv workshops which develop personal and social skills, as well as employability skills which give them strategies for life.

    Aim 4

    To improve links within and between the local communities.


    » Transport will be provided to the central venue and where possible activities will take place within the community neighbourhoods.

    What success will look like

    Success will be...creation of links with various community groups who see KP as a unique resource for their members.

  • Impact


    The Creative Ladder will establish city-wide access to live art for children and young people who rarely participate in creative experiences for social or economic reasons. Success will be high levels of take up by the different communities. Project partners will be asked to evaluate their objectives for participation against results via statistical and qualitative measures. Evaluations will be used to review the service offered and a young person's steering group will be asked to comment.


    Lack of regular take up by target participants and lack of evaluation by community groups will be addressed by regular liaison to ensure measures are taken to achieve mutual objectives.
    Lack of delivery or understanding by professional artists of the specific needs of the participants will be addressed by liaison with community groups to offer the artists specialist training and advice.


    By monthly email report detailing progress on activities carried out and planned, including highlights from participants. Invitation to 1 or 2 key donor events during the year to engage with activities and the Komedia venue.

  • Background


    Although Brighton & Hove has a reputation for being a vibrant creative city, there is a myth that the city is a totally affluent area. However the Council has identified that 1 in 4 children are living in poverty which is below the national average. This means that thousands of children and young people do not have easy access to social, emotional and personal artistic experiences, and are excluded from developing their creative talents due to their family circumstances.


    It is estimated that over 2000 participants will take part each year in the various activities from all the Brighton & Hove communities. The specific target groups will be:
    children and young people with complex SEN, emotional behavourial difficulties and mental health issues aged 3-18 years,
    children and young people with physical and learning difficulties,
    young carers 7 -14 years, children and young people who are excluded, e.g. youth offenders, young parents.

    The Komedia venue is rooted in the creative heart of the city and accessible by all public transport. It has the resources, artists, staff and venue spaces to develop a large scale community arts provision. Komedia thrives on diversity and specialises in nurturing talent in young artists, which can provide a 'creative step up the career ladder' for those looking for new opportunities. KP will employ a specialist youth arts practitioner to co-ordinate all the acitivities and community links.
