Values Led Leadership for Young People
Columba 1400's Leadership Programmes focus on reaching young people who have experienced significant personal and social challenges, such as being in care, leaving care, poverty or exclusion. This project will part fund eight programmes allowing over 100 young people to benefit from our work.
January 2012 - December 2012
Our work will engage with young people and staff through the Young Peoples Leadership Academy coming from residential care, care at home, fostering or those affected by addiction either personally or within their family. Some young people may also have experienced violence, psychological difficulty or crime and anti-social behavior. Achieving our target will mean we can address the personal and social challenges affecting hard to reach young people across the UK.
The first phase of our work is undertaken in the young people's communities. The second, the residential element of our Programmes takes place at one of our inspirational Centres on the Isle of Skye or Loch Lomond. Here, our, participants take part in a range of activities and experiences underpinned by Columba 1400’s distinctive core values. The final phase builds on the residential experience and is designed to meet the needs of participants once back in their home communities or Schools.
To deliver Young People's Leadership Academies in 2012 which through designed activities aim to -
Activities» Raise awareness of self and others
» Connect leadership to personal values and develop social skills
» Build a sense of trust and trustworthiness through leadership practice and participation in physical, intellectual, emotional and refelective activity
» Produce a personal vision and action plan to transfer these learning experiences back into the community
Planned research at key stages will allow us to measure outcomes from the Project.
Columba's values based Leadership Academies equip our young people with a wide range of tools to help tackle the obstacles ahead, including an awareness of their own strengths and abilities, the creativity to see ways of overcoming them and the perserverance to remain strong in times of adversity.74% of Leadership Academy graduates move into or sustain themselves in education, employment or training almost three times the proportion of those who had not participated in the Columba1400 programme.
A young person may chose to leave the programme half way through the week as they may feel at this point in his or her life that they are unable to focus on the Residential experience due to social problems at home, or other external factors. However, this is not the end of their Columban journey. A member of our highly trained Team will work with the young person until they decide that are ready to re-begin the residential element of our programme again.
We will prepare a Report on completion of the project for review by our donors.
