Once Seen theatre company

Access to drama is known to have a lasting and transformational effect on communities and many aspect's of people's lives. 'Once seen' theatre company is a group of performers with learning difficulties who bring to theatre a unique mode of theatrical vision to enrich and broaden scope of drama.

  • Need


    Once seen theatre group is the only drama group for people with learning difficulties in the area. They are trying to broaden their style of theatre and reach much wider audiences in the county. At the same time they offer the opportunities of integration and developing other social skills for people with learning difficulties in a conventional and creative way.


    Once Seen aims to continue to produce a drama annually at York Theatre Royal and various productions at schools and clubs in the area. The company offers opportunities for all people with learning difficulties interested in performing.

    Aim 1

    Once Seen will create and organise an original production for performance in schools or clubs.


    » Once Seen will research and create an original production meeting once per week on a regular basis.
    » Arrangements will be made with schools and clubs to organise performances of the production

    What success will look like

    Success will be found in the quality and entertainment potential of the production.

    Aim 2

    present a production of a unique drama to schools.


    » Arrangements will be made with local schools for children with special needs to organise the production.

    What success will look like

    Success will be measured from the feedback from pupils and staff and the general response to performances.

    Aim 3

    Once seen will research and create a second original drama production for performance.


    » Once seen will meet regularly to research and, along with the artistic director, create an original production.
    » A performance will be organised with York Theatre Royal and a schedule of rehearsals and performances will be arranged.

    What success will look like

    Success will be in the creative quality and entertainment potential of the production. The potential amount of interest and relevance in the production from the local community.

    Aim 4

    Once Seen will organise a production at York Theatre Royal in Feb/March 2011.


    » Once Seen, with the support of others, will produce literature, costumes, stage designs, music and other production requirements.

    What success will look like

    Success will be measured by the turnout of audiences, their response to the production and feedback from local media.

  • Impact


    Once Seen will bring to the Theatre its unique mode of theatre and broaden the scope and variety of productions. It will highlight concerns and issues for people with learning difficulties and create further awareness within a wider community. The company will offer opportunities for actors with learning difficulties to cultivate their skills and abilities.


    There is a risk that either performers, supporters and other professionals may suffer with sickness and withdraw from productions. Once Seen has previously dealt with this and has a contingency of finding other substitutes or stand -ins.


    Once Seen will have literature relating to its productions and there is usually press coverage. Information of the activities will be reported on the York People First blog regularly, project magazine and annual reports.

    Once Seen is an established theatre company formed and organised by York People First the only self-advocacy group in York and its member's form ninety percent of the performers in Once Seen.
