Ziban Albe Full Elementary School, Hiwane, Tigray

To upgrade and basically furnish an existing village community built school for 1,200 children from Grades 1 to 8 replacing unsafe twig & wattle shacks with five blocks of four roomed modern, cool, stone built classrooms with bright windows, ceilings & tiled floors. To add another dry latrine block.

  • Need


    The existing school was community built and is fast falling into disrepair with unsafe buildings that are dirty, insect and rat ridden and dusty and wet at the whims of the weathwer. These buildings are not condicive to a good study environment


    It will provide stone built cool bright and airy classrooms basically furnished to replace the existing 5 blocks of 20 classrooms

  • Impact


    Education is a long term process, success could be measured by how many of these children are promoted to Grade 9. or how better their lives have the potential to be after just eight years at school


    In liaison and cooperation with the local governmemnt we have been building full elementary schools is isolated parts of this district of the Tigray Region for over five years.(this will be our 7th school). The CEO has been working here for 20 years and has an excellent local team as our implementing partner with an exzcellent honest Contractor. We are well aware of the risks and can antici[pate and generally offset for all problems such as weather, site access, local shortages of materials.


    Periodic reports by newsletter and website with video clips as requested. On completion major donors are invited to the dedication and opening ceremony where we believe seeing is believing. Final report and accounts are then submitted.

    Ziban Albe, Hiwane Village, Hintalo/Wajrat Wareda (District) in the South East Zone of the Tigray Region in Northern Ethiopia


    Over 1,200 children from poor marginal farming families who are ekeing out a living an arid rocky soil. THis region was the site of the 1984/5 famine which over a million died and was subject to 18 years of forced migration and suffering during the Derg Marxist regime. Accepted to be one of the neediest in Ethiopia

    The CEO has worked in Africa since 1964 as an Engineer, Manager & Red Cross worker on field-based community projects. He has worked in this area since 1993 and is well regarded and trusted. Our local implermenting partners are ably staffed by competent, honest and professional local staff. THis will be the seventh school we have built and have the highest reputation for quality, reliability and straight dealing.
