ANA: one life is not enough

Stellar Quines has teamed up with Montreal based Imago Theatre to create a courageous and fantastic piece of theatre. ANA journeys across time, many lives and different countries. Her story reflects on madness, women's suffering and the choices people make in a crisis situation.

  • Need


    At some point in their lives many women will suffer from mental health issues. Inspired by the ancient Sumerian goddess Inanna's decent into the underworld, ANA challenges the roles created by society for women and raises questions around madness and depression and why the latter affects so many more women than men.


    Some of Scotland and Quebec's leading theatre practitioners have teamed up with this production to create a multi faceted reflection on the perplexities and consequences of mental health issues and women who challenge convention. This collaboration will culminate in a unique, courageous, bilingual and thought provoking piece of theatre which will claim international appeal.

    Aim 1

    To produce a fantastic piece of live theatre that will showcase both Scottish and Canadian talent.


    » ANA unites some of Scotland and Canada's leading artists including writers Clare Duffy and Pierre-Yves Lemieux and director Serge Denoncourt.

    Success will be demonstrated by working with artists and practitioners of the highest quality with proven track records in producing innovative and inspiring creative work.

    Aim 2

    To tour to key venues across Scotland and reach a diversity of audiences.


    » ANA will open at Edinburgh's Traverse theatre and tour to Glasgow, Dundee, Inverness and other regions.

    Success will be measured by securing a comprehensive tour schedule which will reach across boundaries to include urban and rural audiences throughout Scotland.

    Aim 3

    To experiment with digitizing a live performance in order to expand ANA's reach and impact.


    » A live performance of ANA will be filmed in 3D. Screenings will then be toured to venues and audiences the live show is unable to reach.

    The success of this element of ANA will be determined by the number of new audiences the 3D screenings attracts to the work.

    Aim 4

    ANA's online presence will be an interactive experience where audiences can share their stories.


    » A targeted engagement campaign will draw audiences into, and encourage them to be part of, ANA's story.

    Stellar Quines is working with digital experts to deliver this aspect of the project.

  • Impact


    ANA will offer insights into women's mental health issues and the expectations of gender. The production and its digitization will provide a voice and representation in a creative way for audiences to engage with these issues. While ANA's online presence will be an innovative space through which anyone, anywhere can share their experiences.


    The primary risk to this project is lack of financial resources. The project has attracted significant investment from Creative Scotland and additional support from the British Council and the Peggy Ramsay Foundation. Further resources will enable the project to reach more people, thus increasing its impact and legacy.


    Donors will receive regular updates on the progress of the production as it is created and have full access to both Stellar Quines' new website once it is built and ANA's specific website.

  • Background


    Stellar Quines Theatre Company is based in Edinburgh.
    ANA is a creative collaboration between Stellar Quines and Canadian Theatre Company: Imago. ANA will receive its world premiere in Montreal in November 2011 and European premiere in Edinburgh in March 2012. ANA will then tour across Scotland, both as a live performance as a digitized recording.


    Stellar Quines has over the past 18 years developed a large and loyal audience. This audience is spread across Scotland and the company works tirelessly in developing lasting relationships with audiences old and new. ANA has relevance to women in particular and Stellar Quines will ensure that women across all age ranges will be able to experience and participate in this unique project.

    Stellar Quines was formed in 1993. The company has a proven track record in producing theatre which simultaneously challenges and entertains audiences across Scotland and beyond. Stellar Quines is known for creating high quality theatre which confronts issues affecting women including: domestic abuse, bereavement, health issues and pregnancy, and providing opportunities for women working in the theatre sector.

    Muriel Romanes

    As the award winning Artistic Director of Stellar Quines, Muriel will work collaboratively with Imago Theatre on the artistic development of ANA.

    Serge Denoncourt

    The internationally recognised and acclaimed Serge Denoncourt will direct ANA and bring his own unique, creative flourish to the production.

    Lesley Anne Rose

    Stellar Quines' Creative Producer, Lesley Anne has worked in development and fundraising roles in the arts for over 15 years.

    Mary Paulson-Ellis

    As Stellar Quines' General Manager, Mary, who is an experienced Arts Manager, will have overall responsibility for ANA's budget.
