Beveridge Health and Social Care

To provide a free Homecare service for the elderly people of Bangladesh who have no access to proper medical services or health care due to poverty. Care, respect and dignity for vulnerable elderly people lie at the heart of the Foundation’s work and it would like to continue to run this project.

  • Need


    Vulnerable elderly people in Bangladesh are in desperate need of basic health and social care. Family members are finding it increasingly difficult to provide such care to their elderly loved ones because of their poor living conditions that add to health problems and also because of lack of time to spend at home to look after them. In the current economic environment, family members are required to go out and scratch a living as best they can to provide food for all the family.


    SWBF will provide free home care and assistance to vulnerable people aged 58 and over in such activities as personal care,preparation of meals (general and special diets), arranging physician appointments, recreational activities with trained staff . The foundation uses the same framework as it has in the UK for the last ten years to make this project successful. It has transferred many of the skills such as Admin & Mgmt, Training & Development, Research expertise to Bangladesh.

    The Foundation seeks to promote Healthcare and research in Bangladesh for vulnerable elderly people


    » » Expand the Foundation’s operations office In Dhaka, Bangladesh to manage the enhanced homecare service
    » Expand training of administrative staff and care assistants to provide the homecare service
    » Start to develop firmer communications links with local hospital staff and doctors so they can refer patients to the Foundation
    » Promote health awareness to the general public on such topics as diabetes, heart problems, strokes, nutrition, dementia .

    What success will look like

    Success be measured in providing service to at least 600elderly by end 2011, involve 58 elected councillors and 2 international research institutions assisting the cause.

  • Impact


    The project will re-enforce the importance of the elderly in our community and make sure they are not regarded as burden. For those families who are unable to seek work due to their committment to their elderly will have the chance to seek work and improve skills and bring in higher households income. In practice, create long term and skillful employment for the locals. We can demonstrate the success by evaluting service users and positive
    outcomes whilst evaluating feedback from key staff.


    The risks are that we can run out of funding and therefore unable to continue providing services. We have planned setting up a core fund which help to run operation whilst looking for donations and funding from other bodies. We are building partnerships with other charities who share the same ethos as SWBF who may provide funding or continue as joint venture. SWBF in the meantime will be looking to invest in land and property to bring in additional incomes for current and future pojects.


    Poject funders will receive audited financial reports on a yearly basis outlineing the activities the foundation has been pursuing over the period. They will also be receiving regular emails on the project and outcomes. A foundation newsletter will be provided to them as a 3 monthly report.

  • Background


    Foundation has launched its first international Homecare Project in Dhaka- where vulnerable elderly people are in great need. It is managed by the Foundation’’s office in the city's business district. This area had been chosen as the epicentre from where the foundation can provide its services to the neighbouring areas. The Area has good transport links and is easily accessible for service workers and the users. SWBF sought to remain cost effective whilst providing professional care service


    The population of Dhaka city currently stands around 12.8millions where almost 67% has Lower household income. There are three main groups that will benefit from this project. Firstly, the services users, the families of the users who previously failed to give this care to thier elder loved ones and the young educated Care assistants who now have a dignified profession to offer. An overall benefit for a country of Bangladesh which has achieved democratic government after a long struggle.

    Why Us?

    Care, respect and dignity for vulnerable elderly people lie at the heart of the Foundation’s work. It has many years experience in this area and in fighting poverty through its staff and Management Board members as well as through Majlish Homecare Services that has been operating in the London for over 10 years. The experience and knowledge gained in the UK through this work is being applied to other countries to help alleviate the distress and preserve the dignity of elderly poor people.

    Prof. Alan Lee Williams OBE (Ex-Chairman)

    Was Member of Parliament in the 1960s and 70s; Warden and Chief Executive at Toynbee Hall in the East End of London 1986-92, gives overall leadership.

    Director at Majlish Homecare UK, providing culturally appropriate homecare in inner city areas of London. Looks after day-to-day mangt. of the project
