  • Need


    There is currently no space in Kent, available to the whole community, specifically designed and solely dedicated for music performance and education. There is also a lack of space in the county in which music therapy practitioners can work. All this impacts negatively on opportunities for high quality music performance, music education, the training of talented young musicians and opportunities for using music to support some of the most vulnerable in our society.


    "More than a Concert Hall" will create centre for music, with a concert auditorium, rooms for rehearsals and workshops and public areas for exhibitions. The centre will also include a music therapy suite. With these facilities and in partnership with music organisations of international repute, Canterbury Christ Church University will be able to offer a wide range of opportunities to people of all backgrounds to engage in music.

    Aim 1

    To create a purpose-built centre for music in Canterbury.


    » Raise the necessary funds (budget £9M) through a fundraising campaign to individuals and grant making authorities.
    » Promote the Project throughout Kent and beyond to raise public awareness and to engage the interest and support of a range of stakeholders.
    » Engage in the construction process.

    Success will be...cutting the ribbon on the a music centre in Canterbury.

    Aim 2

    Through the music centre, to bring new opportunities for music performance and education to Kent.


    » Build partnerships with a range of prestigious music organisations to extend the range of music activities the University can offer
    » Build relationships with local schools and youth groups to extend the range of participants who can benefit from the activities of the music centre.
    » Develop a programme of exciting and innovative music offerings, including concerts, workshops, masterclasses, summer schools and education projects
    » Develop a marketing strategy for promoting the annual music programme to the wider community

    Success will be...finalisation of a programme of wide ranging musical activities incorporating a variety of music styles for people of all ages and abilities

    Aim 3

    Promote music as an agent of social change, contributing to individual/social health and wellbeing.


    » Include a music therapy suite within the new music centre and extend relationships with PCTs to use this for music therapy training and practice
    » Work with organisations that use music to promote social wellbeing - eg using music to understand other cultures/communicate across divided groups
    » Promote a programme of activities for all ages - including Silver Song clubs for the elderly, University of the Third Age, Music for Babies etc

    Success will be...1) people of all backgrounds/abilities engaging in music 2) evidence (testimony) of music improving quality of life/health, capacity to learn/communicate.

    Records of all donors kept in secure database. Donors receive standard updates on project 2 - 3 times and special notification of any outstanding developments. They are also regularly invited to events associated with the project. Up-to-date news also available on project website.

  • Background


    The project is located close to the centre of Canterbury and close to the local community. It is on the site of the Grade II listed former church of St Gregory the Great. The church has been owned by the University and used for music rehearsal and performance since 1982 and the project will offer opportunities for dual usage of the church and new centre. The church grounds are extensive and have become overgrown. The project will relandscape these to return the site to its former beauty.


    The local and regional community, tstudents, alented musicians, regionally based composers, regionally based arts festivals, the University's partner music organisations, individuals seeking to train as music therapists, individuals requiring music therapy, the local and regional economy (through a boost to cultural tourism in the area).

    Why Us?

    Canterbury Christ Church University has a long history of music, spanning over 45 years. Over the last 25 years, its Music Department has grown in size and reputation and now supports 400 students a year studying on a range of programmes. It is well known and respected for music performance with staff, students and visiting musicians giving 80+ concerts a year. It has prestigious partnerships with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (Master of the Queen's Music), the Maggini Quartet and Classic FM.
