Disability Hate Crime

In recent years as more and more vulnerable adults live more independant lives, there has been increasing incidents of hate crime, involving bullying, name calling and often of servious violence and fatality. We hope to raise more awareness and understanding in the community.

  • Need


    As people with learning difficulties become more integrated in society and attention is drawn towards them in local communities, it has been found that this attention can become very negative. The incidence of bullying by young people is regularly reported and there are incidents of individuals being unable to leave their own homes because of the fear of hate crime.


    By raising awareness in Schools in our area and bringing the attention of the problem of Disability Hate Crime, we hope to encourage a sympathetic and more positive attitude towards disabled people and encourage more support in the local community. Through the use of a drama presentation with people with learning difficulties we hope to show and demonstrate their true potential and abilities. A training package we provide will bring further work and original ideas for addressing the problem.

    What success will look like

    Success will be from the reception of the drama presentations and reaction and comments. We will encourage schools to let us have original ideas of dealing with the problem.

  • Impact


    By raising awareness of the problem then increasingly local communities will concern themselves for the welfare and best interests of disabled people. The problem will continue to be a concern for schools for the future. Our hope is for a further increase of disabled people having safe and fulfilling lives in all parts of the area with much less incident of hate crime being reported.


    There is a risk that the performers may not be able to undertake the commitment in its entirety. The support staff may not be able to attend the presentations from time to time. We have people that shadow the performers and who may step in to take over roles that are vacant. There is a contingency plan for support with other individuals being available at short notice to cover.


    The donors can access our blog that will be updated and reporting on work in schools regularly. they can also have copies of the annual report and of the portfolio of feedback from schools and others

  • Background


    York People First is the only self-advocacy organisation in York, North Yorkshire, and has earned a reputation amongst professionals including Universities, Police, NHS, local authority and National Statutory Organisations and in the community for its work of speaking up for people with learning difficulties.


    People with learning difficulties living in the York area will benefit from the work of this project and hopefully, with a wider public becoming more aware of the DVD on the Internet and from awareness amongst professionals this will extend nationally.

    Why Us?

    York People First is a self-advocacy group with all members people with learning diffiuclties. The most powerful aspect of the drama presentation that has been recognised i the fact that the performers describe their own personal experiences of disability hate crime and prejudice.

    Sandra Gilpin

    Sandra, project worker, is an experienced teacher, support worker and has worked with people with learning difficulties since the 1970's.
