The New Sector - Strategy development
In response to the end of Aiming High for Disabled Children in March 2011, Shared Care Network is redefining it’s strategy to reflect the changing needs of the short-break sector. We are looking for core funding support to help us through this development time.

The changes which Aiming High for Disabled Children has produced has radically increased the quantity of short-breaks available but quality has been secondary to this development. It has left clear gaps in the provision of quality training and policy advice to new short-break providers. These new providers are, in the main, outside of the established home based short-break model we have previously focused on.
We will develop our organisation with a new focus on Innovation and lobbying to bring new vigour to the short-break sector. Our project will:
Develop Shared Care Network as the organisation which defines and provides structure to the ‘new’ short-break sector.
Position Shared Care Network as the organisation fit to lead and influence the sector.
Shared Care Network will be a sustainable organisation with varied income streams including self generating income via training and consultancy

Activities» Sharing of best practice and innovation and communication with the wider public and decision makers.
Organisation membership, network subscription and event attendance rises to reflect the diverse range of short-break services and workforce now involved in providing short breaks.

Activities» Through links with other organisations we will provide a better understanding and richer illustrations of the benefits of outcome focused short-breaks
Shared Care Network is recognised by Government and the Third Sector as the UK's short-breaks Charity. We are the leading best practice, training and consultancy provider.
Shared Care Network will be a sustainable organisation
Activities» We will protect our financial security by increasing and maintaining our reserves to the equivalent of 6 months running costs.
» Create varied income streams including self generating income from our training and consultancy services.
We will establish a supporter base to attract unrestricted income streams. Our training, consultancy and publications will contribute substantially to our income and build reserves
Our Project will take forward the ground work initiated by the Government’s Aiming High for Disabled Children Programme. This has increased the quantity and potential of short-breaks for disabled children and Young People but we feel the provision for quality care and workforce development has been left lacking. To build, not dissipate, momentum for short breaks and increase the breadth of opportunity and development for disabled children and young people will be our long term project legacy.
There is a risk that preventative solutions to social problems will receive less focus due to the need to protect crisis services in the current economic climate. We have dealt with this risk by lobbying relevant decision makers. There is a risk our organisation will not be able to secure project grants towards our work due to the current economic climate and public funding cuts. We have minimised this risk by seeking alternative income streams to secure the core work of the organisation.
As our working practice involves research, consultation and monitoring, we can provide donors with impact measurement reports to show them the difference their donations have made through the work of our organisation. Our events will allow donors to see the work we do and meet their beneficiaries.

Shared Care Network reaches throughout the UK, predominately in England and Wales. Our regional groups are active in Scotland and we have links with Northern Ireland and representaiton of the region on our board of Trustees.
Disabled Children, Young People and their families currently accessing or eligible for short-break care and the short-break carers and schemes who provide their direct care and support. Our beneficiaries will receive improved provision and variety of short-breaks, increased quality of care from short-break carers and better practice and transparency from the schemes who provide the service.
Shared Care Network is the UK's short-break charity. for over 20 years Shared Care network has led research into the need and benefits of short-breaks, collected and disseminated best practice to practitioners, provided support and advice to short-break schemes and led nation wide recruitment campaigns.

Candy has been Chief Executive of Shared Care Network for the last 10 years, notably leading the transition to independant charity status in 1998
Rob has significantly increased the amount and breadth of training and consultancy services the charity provides to members and the wider sector.
