PALS and BreakAway
To create weekend and holiday activities for children and young people with severe learning disabilities where they can enjoy stimulating, tailored activities, interacting with their peers in a safe, structured and happy environment
January 2008 - December 2016
Kangaroos have been providing out of school activities since 1994, for children with severe learning disabilities many of whom have additional behavioural, physical or sensory problems, as well as a number with Autism and ADHD.
Ours is the only organisation in our area which caters for the needs of this extremely varied and complex group of children on a regular basis throughout the year.
We run two saturday Clubs most weeks and playschemes in the school holidays offerring a range of activities at our base and a varied programme of trips out specific to the needs of the children aged from 6 to 19.
We have over 40 children who attend these activities who have very little access to activities outside the home or school environment, and can only take part in the activities because our setting provides such a highly supervised, structured environment.
Increase self confidence and social competence of children and young people with sld.
Activities» Provide activities where they can interact with their peers and experience new activities receiving support from trained staff and young volunterrs.
Success will be... That families report an increase in the self confience and social competence of their children whilst at Kangaroos but also elsewhere.
Provide greater choice of enjoyable activities where they can intereact with their peers
Activities» PALS-for children aged 6-12 and young people up to 19 who have more complex needs. Sat Club & Playscheme
» BreakAway - Sat Club and holiday playscheme for young people who are mored indepent and benefit from an informal atmosphere
Success will be...If our families continue to support our activities and give us positive feedback on activities provided and children feedback that they are having fun!!
Promote greater independence from familes and provide short breaks from caring responsibilities.
Activities» By providing a safe, happy environment where parents feel confident to leav their son/daugher knowing that they will have a worthwhile experience
Success will be...If youngsters are more confident about accessing ours and any other activities in the future and that parents are happy to leave them with us.
Improve self esteem of volunteers
Activities» By offering young volunteers from local schools the opportunity to support and build relationships with other young people who will really benefit.
Success will be...If volunteers become more confident, stay with us or go on to work within the sector
Our project enriches the lives of youngsters who’s social and leisure opportunities are severely limited by their disabilities, by providing appropriate and enjoyable activities. The young people benefit considerably by having their own club where they can enjoy activities, meet friends, make new friends and experience leisure activities that other young people take for granted but ours can only enjoy in a safe, supervised environment.
Our only risk is the constant battle that we have to raise sufficient funds each year to meet the demands of this extremely worthwhile and popular project
We provide newsletters three times a year and have a brand new website detailing all our latest news, photographs and videos. We supply reports, plans and budgets regularly and when required

We have been running our schemes since January 1994 and have built up a wealth of experience in caring, managing and entertaining this highly diverse and complex group of children. The schemes are run by experienced playleaders, the majority of whom also have full time jobs working with special needs children.
